May I have tips on trapping?
I have set up loop snare, fox boards, deadfalls, etc. all are decent or better, baited proparley (to my knowledge) and I have followed the baiting fox trap ritual at sunset. I have seen the animals I am hunting for, and yet, nothing. They are in the middle of the woods in a rarely traveled part.
My bait for the loop snare was... seeds I do belive, or mabye a turnup, fox trap was raw grouse meat, and the dead fall was same as snare.

What am I doing wrong, please, I cannot relie on fishing forever becuase I am working on a cabin!

How much time they have been set up? You might have days untill you get something from them, and rituals might or might not work, they don't assure you will get what you want, but iws part of the mysticism. If you want, you can try to hunt by yourself but rememebr to prepare.

The more traps you place the more chance you have of catching something in the area; trap fences work.

I often use trapping in early game. My technique is to place single traps - snares or the simplest deadfalls - every 50-100m in a path or loop along a forest edge. (so one trap per tile)

My goal is to catch birds, so I won't place a lot of traps until I see some birds. Some birds will just move around a lot and blunder into unbaited traps. Some like berries, especially crowberries. Birds of prey go after meat. Ravens are omnivores. Bait according to what birds you see.

My technique won't get you a large animal, but it can get you lots of small ones, and get you some trapping skill increases.

alright thanks. So question, if I see something, say, a raindeer and it steps on a world map tile with a pitfall, or a fox and baited fox board, what are the general odds of them triggering it (assuming I'm a novice with decent traps and freshly baited)

ok so I have made deadfall traps near my camp to keep wolves away, but baited to see if they are still near and where. two things: is it too close to human activity, secondly I am using raw fish, will they go for raw fish? (becuase I do not have a bow, so getting red meats is tricky. could I use a person :steamhappy: ?)

I just had a wolf fall in one of my deadfalls baited with a cooked, almost eaten pike. IT's been about 2 weeks after baiting so the fish must have been rotten already, so I'm not sure if the wolf was an accidental victim or if it did indeed go for the trap, but hey, it worked. Could also be that if you bait the trap, there's a bait flag put on it and it doesn't get removed when meat goes bad.

ok I actually did catch a fox near a village. the wolves were just slppery ungrateful S@#$% who wouldnt take food. Rotted fod is now not very effective bait. I just saw a fox running around, quick trap, an hour later there is a fox. But im dead now, I kill half a village and finally died becuase they were not nice to me. but half was dead and probably others injured so :steamhappy:

Haha nice. But yeah wolves seem to be tricky to trap for me. I've watched them several times look at my baited trap and say no thanks, while I've watched several foxes dive in head first (into pawboards). In general they are tough to deal with if you have them near your camp. I've found a high archery skill works though. That said I haven't played anyone with better than 30ish trapping skill. But I can say that, in my hunt for feathers to make arrows, making camp in a pine mire and laying out 7 or 8 loop snares would net me a few birds every couple days even with inferior quality. I don't even bother to bait them unless I'm going after a nuisance goshawk. I do however try to find berry bushes and put them around those. Also the paw board traps have never worked for me unless I actually spot a fox in an area and then put the trap down. Usually it's a fox that comes to my camp looking for a free meal, so I give it it's last.

Ah so I see it is not just me having trouble with wolves, feels good. My axe skill was very high, So I didnt need a bow, unless it ran. Thanks though, I'll set up loop snares.
You don't have to worry about your camp scaring animals away. In fact having cellars of food and whatever else will make animals want to raid your camp for snacks.

When I make a homestead I make sure to build a trap-fence as well. I'll commonly get big animals walking right into it.

I've never had much luck with bait...doesn't seem to improve the trap much. I make cheap light deadfalls and place them along the waterline to catch birds. I'll line an entire coastline, and in the fall there are more birds than I can handle for skinning and cooking. The bird corpses will draw foxes. If there is a fox or medium sized critter I'll throw out some snares and hope for a catch, but it's not very effective. I have better luck hunting the fox.

I make trap fences with pit traps every 8 or 10 tiles, and I make the fence run along a natural chokepoint or other area where i see a lot of reindeer. I'll catch reindeer, wolves, and bears that way. As long as I don't die in the first few months, I can get more food than I can eat so I sell it and/or hire NPCs. I don't recall ever killing a human in a pit trap.

Having a dog is a MUST. If I stumble on a reindeer or other prey I tell the dog to chase one, and I walk trying to follow as best I can. The dog with exhaust the animal and will sometimes kill it. If it's still alive, it won;t be able to run.

I don't really use other traps since these ones are pretty effective.

Thanks. I have heard a dog is a must have, now I just need to find who sells them. Lots of walking ahead.

Certain cultures are more likely to have livestock than others. And if your staring location is far away from any cultures then you have a tough time ahead.
