magic spell for fishing, and spirits

It's hard to figure out if the magic in the game works.

One thing I wonder is, I started last time with a procedure that said step in the punt backwards and push off backwards when you go fishing. but I didn't have a punt so I tried it with a raft. I think maybe it helped some but I couldn't tell. Does it apply to rafts or does it need a punt?

Also how do you tell how often to make a sacrifice and how big does it need to be? Like at first I only made one when I "felt a cold wind" but later I started doing it a bit more. Like if you're fishing then is sacrificing a roach good enough?

What do the spirits do? just give you bad luck on things?

The rituals and magics of the world are supposed to be inherently mysterious. Taking away the mystery of what they actually do, and whether or not they ACTUALLY work would take away from a lot of the charm of the game. Just use your best guess on stuff!

I figured that was the case.... Like it was intentionally difficult to tell if its working or just superstition.

A way I read that someone had used to figure out if you successfully completed a ritual or not is to create a new character (hopefully) with the ritual you're interested in and play the tutorial up until the stage when it tells you to do a ritual. At this point, if you do the ritual correctly the next stage of the tutorial will pop up. So for the punt/raft problem if you step backwards and launch your raft at this stage of the tutorial and nothing happens we can safely assume that it only works with punts.

Incidentally on my current character I also have the same ritual and don't know if it works with my raft but I've been doing it anyway just in case.

i've never seen any raft related rituals,, but the blood staunching incantation definitely stops you from bleeding to death so i'd assume the rest of them do something as well

How do you walk backwards and / or push off backwards when you're not using the confusing default controls but instead use absolute controls?
