A question about live traps
I seem to be asking a lot of questions for someone who played this game a lot back in the day...
I have a trap fence set up around my little settlement, and on each side I have a single trap pit without spikes. Every so often, when it seems like starvation is about to set in, some large animal will come to examine my crops (which is why I set up the fence in the first place) and will fall into one of my trap pits. Currently, I have an elk and a forest reindeer trapped and fenced in. I am asking, how long will they stay in the pits? I managed to catch a live bear in a heavy deadfall bear trap, and I am now sleeping on bear fur with my bearskin cloak and hat, but before that the bear stayed in the deadfall for close to three days while I stayed near it making javalins to throw at it. I even slept with the bear in the trap and it never broke out. I've gone away from my settlement with elk in my pit traps or birds in my deadfalls and come back days later to find them still there. Do they ever actually break out?

I've found carcasses out of sprung traps, usually by following the bloodscape, but I generally use kill traps. I know many people used to use pit traps to hold prey and grind skills. I'm assuming they could get out on an occasional roll.

It's possible I was just very lucky with the bear. I think I'll remove the fences around one of the elk I've got trapped on the side facing the outside of my enclosure and see if it escapes.

I'm pretty sure I remember a few escapes a long time ago, but it was pretty rare. There was a pretty funny exploit I abused horribly where you make the pit directly in front of where you appear when zooming in. When you did, no time elapsed between your appearance so you could attach a rope to whatever was in the pit as long as you made no prior moves.

I have often thought that the remaining trap pit exploit needed to be addressed to prevent training dummies/spoilage free animal storage. Something like an animal steadily starves to death and gives itself random injuries when in the pit.

I had a crippled bear manage to climb out of a trap pit during my attempt to finish it and fight for its life in URW current version, but this is fairly rare, and I think if you leave it alone it will not climb out.

Smaller animals like grouses are in danger of being eaten by foxes or wolves when they're stuck in the trap, but a bear should be fine for fairly long term stay in there.

Yeah, the elk I had in my pit trapped stayed in the pit for 3 weeks while I healed from an arrow wound in the shoulder and completed my smokehouse.
