Fishing nets?

So I heard that nets are a good way to get food, unfortunately I don't know where to place them. Usually the water next to the ground near lakes or sea are not deep enough, but if I swim into the lake I can't place them. What is the ideal way to place them?

Sometimes I actually wonder how it is possible that I came this far in life. Thanks anyway, that makes total sense.

It appears to have changed from a tutorial I am following where you could choose "Passive Fishing" and then cast your nets into rapids. Passive fishing no longer appears as an option.

If you select the fishing skill from the skills menu (opened by pressing 's') you should see a menu and passive fishing should be an option there. If its not there, then that seems like a bug or something.

Normal river titles are the best for fishing, apparently rapids have beem nerfed. Used to get lots of large fish from rapids, but now it seems like the rate has been reduced.
