Can't tan hare or squirrel hides?

It says on the wiki that it's possible but I can't do it. It gives me an error message saying "This item is not suitable for that" Tried all options in hideworking. Any ideas?

Is it a har/squirrel fur or hide? Furs are already tanned and can't be tanned again. Also, rotten/spoiled hides can't be tanned.

The tanning process goes like this;
skin it (alt+h then s at carcass)
clean it (alt+h then c)
tan it (alt+h then t)
tan it (alt+h then t)
tan it (alt+h then t)
