Pit Trap Question and a couple others
Some newbie questions:

First, I'm learning how to set a trap fence to maximize pit traps -- before I get anything in a pit trap, I want to know how do I get the kill out of the trap without hurting myself. I mean, do I walk on to the tile of the trap in order to skin an elk that had been killed on the spikes in the pit trap?

About traps -- from reading about the game I gather that pit traps with a proper fence are the best type of trap. Are any of the other traps any good? I've been using a lot of light lever traps in different areas, but I'm barely getting any grouse. Would it be wise to use the 8 or so grouses I've killed so far to make cordage for loops instead of using light lever traps?

Also, I'm trying to understand the hireling adeventurers before I actually hire one. They always seem to want food and sometimes weapons. After I give the adventurer some food to join me, do I have to give him more food everyday? If yes, then what happens if I don;t have enough food?

thanks, great game!

I've found snares to be far more effective at catching birds than lever traps.
I can average around ten birds a week if I place them properly.

Once an animal activates a trap, it will no longer hurt you.
You can walk on the tile and butcher the kill freely.

Companions will ask for food to cover the entire length of the journey, so there's no need to give them more food each day.

Thanks. One more question. I've been checking my traps almost every day. Is there a timer to be aware of? That is, should I let a couple days go by between checking on them in order to maximize potential?

There isn't a timer, you probably just aren't placing your traps very well. Checking every few days probably isn't a bad idea either.

For your first question, you can skin/butcher a corpse from an adjacent tile. When you tell your character to do those things, the game will check if a carcass is near you. Second, if you try to pick up a corpse from a nearby tile and it is too big to carry, the game will prompt if you wish to pull the corpse to your tile.

For other traps, each trap is designed for certain animalls. Pit traps are work well against reindeer and elk/stags for instance where a small deadfall trap is for foxes and similiar sized animals. So it's not about what is most effective, it is about what you want to catch.

In my opinion, there are only small differences between snares and light lever traps. I haven't really seen a difference in the amount of things I catch.

- Light lever traps only require the time to pick up the materials and set the trap. It can be reset easily by kicking the trap to disarm it, then alt+r,(r)eset. They can catch hares and foxes as well as birds. The carcass can sometimes be harmed; this is likely only a problem if your hideworking is very poor.

- Snares are very portable, but you need to spend leather to make the cord. To reset you need to kick the snare, pick it up, and re-apply it; it's not hard but it's a little more work (It adds up if you have 20 traps to check every other day, and to reset every 4-6 days). They won't catch foxes, but will catch hares. The caught animal is unharmed (until the trapper hits it too hard).

- Fox traps are like snares in that they need to made beforehand. They also do not harm the animal. They only catch foxes.

I try to check my traps every other day, but if there's animals in the area I might recheck a trap in 6 hours or less.
