... curious, I had three, Zeus, Perseus and Apollo, then I picked up a fourth, and Apollo bailed. Is that the way it is supposed to be? Or can I take that as a plot point?

you can only have 3 at a time so they change them up from time to time depending on what the next level(s) going to be, like if you need a certain special ability they will switch in that guy/gal.
