Opening • Statement

Hey, hello, and hi, it is I, flower baasket here. Bet you'll never guess what this Steam Post is gonna focus on. Truly, it’s exciting.

But, before that, I usually like to take this time to talk about music, and this post is no exception. But, it's not exactly just a song this time. This month, I saw the Project Sekai movie in theaters. My thoughts? Well, if you've played ProSekai, it's an absolute treat. Long rambling incoming.

Let me start this off by saying that I'm not even the biggest fan of the game. Sure, I'll log on every once in a while, maybe read a story or two, but I don't play often. I watched all of Nightcord, the introduction of WxS, then promptly dropped it. Only picked it up a week before the movie released so I could catch up on the lore.

And I still loved it. Seeing all the characters interact and Vocaloid references was so fun, I especially love the theater reaction. Some people came dressed as Ren and Lin, people were hyped up from the back to back performances at the end, it was wonderful, everyone there was as much of a nerd as I was. And nobody was overdoing it, either, it was one of the best theater experiences I've gone to.

Special shoutout to Tsukasa, who I came dressed as. Guy was clip farming in every scene he was in. I'm already seeing videos of his reactions, he truly was a star. DECO*27 and crew cooked with the six songs, this movie is going to live rent-free in my head for months. Come to streaming, or re-run the movie, I need to watch it again.

...But I suppose that's enough rambling for now. Don't leave me to my own devices, or this post will be 90% Project Sekai. I'm moving on while I still have the chance.

We have...actually some pretty interesting things to go over this month. If I did nothing but UI work, I'd probably go insane, so there's a little bit of everything here.

Story • Progress

101% - Fully fully complete!

...Starting off with something that I finished as early as devlog 1, the story! For testing reasons, I was going to publish a playable build of the game on Steam, so I decided to playthrough the first chapter to make sure that there weren't any game breaking bugs or anything. I Played through the story about three times, and I was pleasantly surprised with the results.
It takes about an hour to complete (while I skipping the dialogue), sometimes longer depending on the items I got. If that doesn't sound like a long time, keep in mind that this game's gonna be like $4 on release. And there's more to do, ya know!

I ended up polishing up some stuff, giving a new sprite to one of the units (it's basically a reskin, but better than nothing), and, at the request of some of my close friends, added 4 new items. There's still some jank elements that I'd like to fix before release, but I'm chalking that up to the UI, and not the mode itself. So, once again, we're done, and better than ever.

I'm putting a cap on adding new content to the game. I know I really should have done that earlier, but adding 1-3 new items isn't that difficult, especially since the base for everything is practically done already. An hour long detour never hurt nobody.

Reminiscent • Progress

90% - Almost Done!

...I knew I said I wouldn't do anything with this mode until the end of May, but my bad, I had a really good reason for that, I swear.

I kept thinking of which faction would be the 2nd one to come on release, and I had some really good enemies. Too many good enemies, actually. I'd design an entire deck, then think of another enemy, and this cycle would repeat, and now I'd be stuck between which one I liked the most. I designed 5 separate decks for 5 separate factions! In less than 2 weeks!

Obviously, if this continued, I'd have about 50 different factions to choose from when June rolled around, so I decided to just bite the bullet and stop stressing over it. And so, here's the winner of the gauntlet: Station Ai Research Subjects!

...More interesting than it sounds, I assure you.

They aren't quite finished yet, the sprite for the 2nd enemy of this faction isn't even done, so I'll go into them more in the next devlog. Once they are finished, though, I'd like to have a couple of friends playtest the finished Reminiscent Mode. If everything's good, then that means I can finally put a cap on Rem, leaving me with nothing to do but balancing and UI changes.

With RemMode being almost completed, I would like to celebrate this occasion the only way I know how...by making a Discord Sever and giving out steam keys giving myself more work. Everyone, give a warm welcome to the new progress category!

Achievements: 60% - No Progress

Challenges: 10% - This game's gonna have challenges...?

UI: 60% - Slow Progress.

Challenges? Woah, nobody said anything about challenges? That's not even on the Steam Page!

Yes, challenges were always planned for the game, though at the time of making the Page, I was unsure of their addition, so I did not mention them. Until now, that is.

I dunno if I want to rename them to something more dream related to fit with the game's theming, but we're balling for now. Don't worry, challenges were taken into consideration when estimating the game's release date, so August still seems like a fairly reasonable task.

The game will be releasing with 8 different challenges, each of them giving an item as a completion reward. Think of Isaac challenges, they aren't designed to be difficult, but fun, unique runs that showcase the more interesting mechanics of Snow • Fall. Most of them aren't even full runs, actually...
As for their progress...I got nothing, sorry. I finished the challenge menu, but that's more of a UI thing. And speaking of UI things...

This is a UI post, how could I forget about that? That's right, a majority of the work for this month went towards finishing the awful looking or unfinished menus in the game. How did that turn out? Erm...I...finished the achievements menu. And redid the death screen...and the challenge menu, but I already said that.

There are genuinely not enough words in the English lexicon to describe my distaste for designing menus. When it works, it works, and I'm satisfied, but when it doesn't, it leaves me feeling like shit. If the game gets delayed, the fault lies with UI. The character selection screen in particular is haunting me, I haven't even touched it for the past month, and that's because I have no idea what to do with it. Even now, I'm drawing blanks, I don't know how to make this look good.

I think I also finished the item encyclopedia menu? I'm very torn on it, I can't decide if it's fine or not, and I think that just means that it's missing something. I think I might have an idea on what to do with it, let's see if I can get it done.

Sorry, I don't have a lot unlocked, I'm very bad at this game :(

Thank you creasion616 for that Griffn art, by the way. Never got the chance to say this anywhere, but it wouldn't be the same game without them, they're an amazing artist, truly. Lucky to have them on board.

Once again, now that everything is mostly finalized, let me restate: Mika Side Story - Severance will be releasing with 50 base items (16 unlockable), 46 base Cubes (or cards, 21 unlockable), 8 challenges, an infinite mode, 34 achievements, and a ~hour and thirty minute long first chapter! I really coded all that?!

It's incredible to see how far this has come, and I really hope I can keep going. This is the end of the devlog. Thank you for reading, and happy 21st!

𝒜nother month, another steam post. Hello, hello, greetings, and hi! I'm shocked, another month flew by without me noticing. Honestly, that's gotta be some sort of record. Three months, and we're somehow not dead in the water. It's kind of shocking, honestly. But, speaking of things that were dead in the water: me!

I got hit with this horrible flu in the middle of the month, and I lost a week's worth of progress because I was just stuck recovering. It may not sound like a lot, but a month is only 4 weeks, and I spent one of those doing literally nothing!

I was going to listen to every song by Chinozo, but by the time I recovered I lost a lot of motivation and never ended up doing it. I listened to some good songs this month, though! Shout-out to Anti-You by Chinozo and RuLe by Ado. I think I really like rebellious themes, now that I'm looking back.

...And speaking of rebellious themes, Snow • Fall! Woo! Despite everything that happened, this is a very packed month, with a bunch of content to go over. Prepare for a long post, 𝒶nd let's get into the progress!

Reminiscent • Progress

80% - Progress Leap?!

I thought I said I was sick? How could I have possibly done 50% worth of work? Well, I might have overestimated how hard it would be to finish Reminiscent Mode. Fuck, it's basically done already.

The two exclusive bosses have their decks done completed, I'm really just waiting a bit to add finishing touches to one of them. They might be a little bit underpowered for their level, but that's about it.

The Station Passives that I was talking about last devlog (go read it) got expanded upon, too. Now each enemy has 4 unique Station Passives, but can only hold 2 at a time. There's also the universal passives, but it's the same deal, 2 at a time. Hopefully this makes it less predictable and more synergistic.

The looping mechanic was also finished! Did I ever mention that? Well, if I didn't, Reminiscent Mode is supposed to be nearly infinite, the run doesn't end unless you want it to. The system I decided on is that after every 15 Nodes, players are given a choice to continue their run. If you pick yes, enemies will get a little buff, usually HP and damage related, then you'll go back to Node 0, and the process repeats.

That little feature forced my hand, let me tell you. I had to make a fodder item that shows up when you exhaust the item pool, which previously wasn't possible because the longest the game went on for before was only 18 Nodes. Breakfasting in Snow • Fall is real now. Not that you should be looping that many times anyway, seriously.

I think Mind's End Piece is a really cool looking item. Too bad most players will probably never see it. And the item sucks, too, so there's that.

The second most notable thing is that 1/2 of the Reminiscent exclusive enemies have been completed! Well, technically, it's 2 enemies, just from 1 faction. That's more so what I mean.

𝒜lzuru Station Personnel, they're quite the rebellious bunch, choosing to ignore any sort of conventional "rules." They use transforming dagger-bows to open the Pale Void, a place of infinite storage which lets them store cards and negative status effects inside of it. Anything in their storage cannot be accessed, which is very bad when it comes to cards, but very useful when it comes to negative status effects. Their decks center around harming themselves for massive pay-offs. They can do some pretty big damage if you let them set up, so they make for a pretty dangerous fight!

Look at them, aren't they just adorable? They look all innocent, but they will kick your ass. And yes, that is technically their uniform. But no, they aren't required to wear it, that would be a stupid "rule." And no, there is no male uniform. The men also wear dresses, because gender norms, too, are merely ignorable "rules."

Unfortunately, poor guys lost their eyes in the transition. Sorry, grunts don't get seeing privileges!

At this point, there's not much else I can do with the mode at the moment. I could finish up the Station Passives and those bosses, but besides that, I can't really do anything. The sprites for the 2nd faction probably won't be worked on until late May. For now, Reminiscent Mode is almost complete, and will probably stay at around 80-90% for a while!

Misc • Progress

Achievements: 60% - Rewards are complete and implemented!

UI: 50% - Bro...

How does one go back 5%? Did I fuckin remove a screen or something? Well, the less funny answer is that I simply didn't do any work on the UI, and while I was working on the Alzuru enemies, I actually found a bug within one of the menus, so now I have even more work to do. Okay, It didn't actually knock me back 5%, but it's a lot funnier to imagine that I did so little work that the game actually devolved. But no, we're still at around 50% when it comes to the UI.

On a more serious note, I'd like to spend April actually working on some of the incomplete menus. Since Reminiscent Mode is in a near complete state, I can afford to sink a bunch of time messing up and testing things.

...Oh, actually, almost forgot, I redid the event screen, and it looks a lot better now. Dark, but it fits the aesthetic. So I guess I actually did make some progress this month. Erm...back up to 55%, I suppose.

As for Achievements, like I said last month, a majority of the achievement rewards are fully functional, though not obtainable in game. There's only about 4 items I have to complete, but I can always do those later. Now, the fun part comes with actually implementing the achievements and making them obtainable. I probably won't focus on it this month, but it's not a long process, anyway. I could dedicate like a week to that, and I could probably get it done.

Hey, hello, and hi! Can you believe it, it's already been a month since the last post. Or, something close to it. And in that month, we've had yet another spike of people wish listing the game! Wonder where that came from...Anyway, I would like to once again thank everyone who has this game wish listed, and another extra thanks to anyone reading this right now. Really makes me feel motivated when I see so many people waiting for the release.

How's your guys' month's going? Personally, I set a goal to listen to every MARETU song and then ranked them. I'd definitely recommend him if gritty music is up your alley. And for those of you who already know who he is, Darling and Maegamist are at the top, Girl Eraser is at the bottom. I'm sorry, I don't make the rules, it's just facts.

But anyway! Enough about me, let's talk more about...me some more! We've got some exciting news this month, so onto the progress!

Reminiscent • Progress

30% - Making Changes

This month was mostly spent redoing old assets and thinking up ways to make the mode more fun without having to introduce a bunch of more units. New units will be coming later, like I said before, but still.

For the second problem, I decided on a system that gives old enemies a little more flair than their story mode counterparts. For that, I have decided on Station Passives!

As you progress through the run, enemies now have a chance to gain Station Passives, which are special passives that copy the effects of specific items. Yes, this means that now your foes can have the same overpowered ass builds that you're running! Every enemy except the final boss can have these.

Each unit has 2 hand-picked passives, but there are 5 universal ones that are unlocked via Steam Achievements.

I still have to tweak their frequency and test them out some more, but some of these combinations are really difficult so far! I was steam rolling most of the game with this one deck, and then I was left with like 15 HP after going against a particularly strong Station Passive combination.

But enough of that, let's get to the cool stuff. The gray background that you've seen in the trailer has been replaced! I've already started using this thing everywhere, it's replaced some of the screenshots already. Made by the wonderful Owen J, I really do think it's my favorite BG in the game right now. Not to undermine the other ones, but this one is really a league of its own.

On a smaller note, Griffn's spear has been replaced with a battle-axe. It's got more personality than the spear, and it fits with the story much better, too.

I had to spend a bunch of time redoing her Cube Art to fit with the new weapon. Not that I'm complaining, that needed to happen, some were over a year old, they didn't look very good. A big thanks to Qubes for never missing with their character sprites, goddamn.

Definitely changes I should have made before putting up the Steam Page, but whatever.

Misc • Progress

Achievements: 40% - Assets are drawn and complete.

UI: 55% - I feel stuck...

Almost all of the Achievement rewards are now in the files. The items have sprites, and the Cubes have Cube Art.
...And that's about it! The next step will be implementing all of their effects, and then after that I can get to making achievements actually obtainable. If I'm not lazy, this really shouldn't take more than two months. I've already started on some of the items, actually.

However, the meat of it is in the UI. I'm starting to notice that this is not my strong suit. Making something stylish is quite difficult for me, it's eating up more time than I'd like to admit.

I made the character selection screen, credits, and item encyclopedia menus all in one month. How many of these are good looking and fully functional? Zero! So, instead of attaching a screenshot of some WIP menus, I'll just add some gifs showcasing 2 of my favorite completed items, both lore and effect-wise.
