Community Crunch 25 and the ARK Digest 20!

Greeting Survivors!

Welcome to the 25th issue of the Community Crunch and ARK Digest 20! To those unaware this is a topic which primarily consist of content to share, made by the community, for the community! As well as any little changes I want to make survivors aware about, which happen within our community ;).

ARK: Fear Evolved

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7b1fbryWOY

This week the ARK has undergone a spooky change where the air is cooler, the days shorter and the nights longer, and a Blood-Moon shines brightly as bats and creepy-crawly creatures of the night appear above ground. Survivors should take care when exploring the island as the mythical DodoRex stomps across the land with an army of blood-thirsty zombie dodos in tow, and a variety of re-animated Skelesaurs walk the lands. For those brave enough to face their fears, there will be a number of new items to craft and collection including thatch-rich scarecrows, custom Jack-o-Lantern carvings, Skelesaur Costumes, Candy-Corn loot drops, Witch Hats, Masks and a Saddle for your spider! You’ll also be granted the opportunity to tame endlessly-rejuvenating Zomdodos, Bats, show off artifacts collected from your adventures in the dangerous caves and of course earn a brand new Steam Achievement!

And for those of you who’ve always wanted their own Zombie Dodo Army and of course to experience the ARK in its spookiest form, now’s the chance as it’s currently 33% off the Steam Store!

Community Contests!

Every week for the foreseeable future we’ll be hosting two contests for our Community Crunch. Remember for this week (and the foreseeable future!) we'll also be accepting entries for the newly introduced: Warpaint images, human and dino tattoos/bodyart for the #ARKArt award as well as bases both on your Brontos and Rafts for #ARKitect! Can’t wait to see the platform bases, the ships and tattoos/bodyart! Also can’t wait to see your new bases in the new biomes!

ARKitect

This is a title given to the Survivor who has created, in our eyes, the best base for the week. Survivors will need to upload their screenshots to the Community Hub, both the Artwork or Screenshot section will suffice and then post them in the designated thread, it’s also possible that we’ll see the screenshots in the hub but posting them in the thread will ensure that they’ll be spotted!

We’ll be judging the bases not on the quality of the screenshot, but on the unique designs, functionality, and the use of in-game tools available to you! At the end of each week, the screenshot for the best base will be featured in our #ARKitect section of the Community Crunch!

Now as it’s a Special Event week with Fear Evolved, we only accepted spooky-submissions and Halloween-esque this week!

The #ARKitect award for Community Crunch 25 goes to…

First place: Valoule

Family Arkdams

Very impressed and very spooky! Huge congratulations as you are this week's ARKitect! We’ll be in touch to get the prizes handled!

#ARKArt

The second contest which will take place is for the #ARKArt award! This is a title given to the Survivor who has created, in our eyes, the best piece of art for that week using our new Per-Pixel painting system! Similarly to #ARKitect, Survivors will need to upload their masterpiece to the Community Hub, both the Artwork or Screenshot section will suffice and then also post them in the designated thread, it’s also possible that we’ll see the screenshots in the hub but posting them in the thread will ensure that they’ll be spotted!

We’ve also got a little request! Do you lovely painters mind uploading your ART PNT files so others could also give them a whirl? http://arkpaint.com/ has recently launched and will be a great place to do so! Be sure to provide a link in your next post :)

Now as it’s a Special Event week with Fear Evolved, we only accepted spooky-submissions and Halloween-esque this week!

The #ARKArt award for Community Crunch 25 goes to…

Survivors, this week we're joined by Joann and they're here to answer some questions and talk about their mods with us. Thanks for joining us! Do you think you could introduce yourself to the community, and let us know about the mods you're currently working on?

Joann:

Hello everyone! My name is Joann, I’m from Singapore and I am currently studying computing :). A lot of the mods I have worked on are based upon player requests and to assist them to make their ARK experience more enjoyable.

I am currently polishing up my Dog Companion mod, and I’ve just released a Photon Sentry Gun Mod so I may be doing some adjustment based on the feedback I receive from players.

I started off making pretty basic mods and have been working towards the more challenging ones. Initially my first mods were the simple Meat Spoiler and the Charcoal Baker, after that I began working on the Pet Finder and Corpse Finder and then my toughest challenge followed that which would be the Dog Companion mod - it took me a month to do! I’m feeling enthusiastic about making more challenging and intelligent mods that players will find useful.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2s-3l_y574

You’ve got quite an extensive list of mods! I can tell that players have definitely appreciated the work you’ve put in, especially with the locator mods! We were most impressed with the Dog Companion mod and as for your latest release, that’s just awesome! What’s your background? Do you happen to have a lot of experience in modding games?

Joann:

I have a bit of a background in computer game science during my education however that was mostly small projects based on Unit3D and Maya. ARK would be my first mod venture! However it’s not been too tricky, there are a lot of online resources which are available and they are very helpful. I’ve also been spending time reading other modder’s similar problems and hurdles as I’ve had, it’ll allow you to get a picture of how to approach and tackle your own issues. All I can say is that so far I am impressed and very happy with the ease in using Unreal Engine’s blueprint visual system!

First modding venture! That’s super impressive considering the amount you’ve already committed to the workshop! What made you want to get into modding ARK? And how do you go about going from picking an idea and releasing it onto the workshop?

Joann:

I believe modding is done for the community, it’s mainly for people to learn and educate themselves - with the side effect of the joy gained from playing the mods of course! I used to play ARK a lot, and back then I shared similar frustrations to a lot of the players on many servers. I thought it would be great if new players had an easier time, so I decided to take those frustrations and offer a way for players to get past them using mods.

Every time I come up an idea I weigh it alongside player’s request and by how many people will find them useful before I plan to undertake them and create a mod. If I find that the idea is also easy to implement, I would leave it to the new modders to give it a try instead, that way they’ll have the opportunity to learn. I believe the main purpose of modding is for everyone to learn and it’s less likely that inexperienced modders will try something if there is already no demand for that mod - for instance if someone had already released a mod that resolves the issue - therefore I leave the problems that have easier solutions free, so others are able to take them on.

That’s a very interesting take on modding, and really nice of you to look out for new modders! Now tell us more specifically about the Dog Companion, where did the idea come from and what requests was it specifically that inspired you to go ahead with this idea?

Joann:

I started Dog Companion because I love small dogs! I also really like Final Fantasy 8, it was the first Final Fantasy game I had ever played and Rinoa was my favourite character, especially her dog which was helping her with all her attacks. So this idea took root from that childhood memory, I imagined that survivors could use a little bit of “backup” when taming or hunting.

Another inspiring factor was a few issues that players had brought up, at times if you were to disable victim collection on your pet, you tend to bite too fast and end up eating the corpse of the Dinosaur you had just killed - so with the Dog Companion mod, I thought it would be possible to solve small problems like the above, such as depositing the inventory automatically from Dinosaur corpses you accidentally eat -- that way the items don’t disappear along with the corpse.

Other small ideas came into play, like how taming creatures with very high torpor base values - it’s very difficult and does not scale too well with small fixed torpor values from tranq arrows - therefore I used the Dog Companion as an ‘assistant’ to help players fix these numerous difficulties in the game, at once! For example, the dog deals a fraction of torpor based on the target’s max torpor amount and also based on the damage dealt by the player.

And finally, the Dog Companion was an experiment for myself to try a hand at changing the AI and introducing a new skeletal model into ARK! I’m not too sure if any other workshoppers have attempted to do so yet apart from altering the options of existing dinos like the scale and re-texturing.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=544412839

It’s really good that you’ve tried to resolve so many things with a unique and fun mod! Can you tell us what the plans are for your current mods, do you plan to grow Dog Companion and your current mods? Or are you working on something new after releasing the Photon Sentry?

Joann:

I have actually been planning to work on a Raid-Boss mod! It’ll have challenging AI mechanics and difficult phases for players to fight through, think of it as being similar to World of Warcraft bosses. I currently feel that the Spider and Dragon Boss models in ARK have been under-utilized so I want to use them to make some really challenging raid-encounters.

I’ve also been keeping an eye on other mods, such as the Bush People mod, as the author is planning to make NPC building-dungeons and raid-like situations for players. It’s still a work in progress so I unfortunately wasn’t able to use it on my server.

Though the players on my server are really wanting a raid-boss mod and it’ll solve a lot of PvP issues, by giving players a common enemy to fight against, they would work together so I’d say it is in huge demand from my players and I hope to try it out myself after seeing how Bush People progresses.

I’m hoping to see players having roles in the game with gear to go alongside it. They’ll play the position of DPS/Healing/Tanks etc when fighting the raid-bosses!

As for my current mods, we’ll see how it goes. Players have requested that I use the Sabertooth and the Dire Wolf from the core-ARK Game. So I’m most likely going to modify the models to make them more like the baby versions in ARK, and then give them different abilities in contrast to the Dog Companion. The Dog’s focus will be torpor build up, the Wolf will focus on attack, health, and damage and the Saber might turn players invisible for a short period of time and focus on their stealth-aspect, similarly to how cats prowl at night -- that’s my trail of thought for now!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ2_xRl93MU

Sounds awesome! Can’t wait to see how your Companion mod progresses, the stealth-trait sounds very fun and exciting! As for the Raid-Bosses, we definitely approve! You’ll be seeing Boss Arenas enter the ARK fairly soon, and we’re fiddling with how raid-like-bosses could work on the ARK too! (Our newest friend the DodoRex is helping us out with that ;-)). Now with all this in mind, you must have some great tips you could share with those working on their own mod and those wanting to get started?

Joann:

It’s a lot of trial and error. If you’re patient and relentless, you’ll find some way past the restrictions in the dev kit. I wouldn’t say asking questions on the mod forums and waiting for an answer has granted me much benefit, so in my opinion it’s better to take it into your own hands and stress test everything yourself.

For those wanting to get started, learn about Unreal Engine 4 first. Watch all the online tutorials that you’re able to find, the ARK Dev kit is based on it after all. Keep your thinking flexible, don’t discourage yourself into thinking linearly, more often I found myself finding a solution to one problem when doing something completely different in another area.

Something to keep in mind is that the ARK Dev Kit is based on a blueprint system and not the C++ code - so make sure you watch the correct tutorials!

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=544413019

Awesome! Thanks for the great tips Joann :). And now is there anything you’d like to wrap this up with?

Joann:

I hope everyone enjoys and appreciates the mods I’ve put up! Thanks for reading the interview. If you’re interested, I run my own server for the Asia Region: Joan’s Fun Mods - so be sure to stop on by if you’d like! Also any donations are most welcome as they’d help me in a long way to keep the server running! Thanks again guys :).

ARK Digest Q&A

Survivor, Cymerio asks, “Will the game use modern OpenGL / Vulkan someday and thus gain features like tessellation, SSAO, etc?”

Answer:

We plan to update to the latest OpenGL version closer to wrapping up development so that we're not hitting a moving target. It's very tedious to generate builds for different shader platforms, so for now it's better to keep it to fewer platforms since we tend to release builds so quickly. But as we hit the final launch stretch, it'd make sense to upgrade the Mac and Linux renderers and we plan to do so then (which will make them look basically like the PC version).

Survivor, PainKiller asks, “When you click on the Leave Tribe Command can you add a confirmation prompt?”

Answer:

That’s a good idea, we’ll do that!

Survivor, AtomicNM asks, “Will other methods of obtaining dossiers be implemented so that they don't just pop into your face after killing or taming?”

Answer:

There won’t be different method for creature Dossiers, however we will be including different methods for Plant Dossiers! (Yup, there will be dossiers for Plants!). Also, they won’t pop up in your face for much longer, instead you’ll get a prompt where you can press a button to optionally open up that Dossier specifically after discovering it.

Survivor, Nui-Chan asks, “Random GPU Driver Crash Fix: Truesky -- What’s the current progress on this fix?”

Answer:

It’s a low-level driver issue that we actually don’t have a lot of visibility into, and due to how infrequent it is, it makes getting a reproducible test case quite difficult. We intend to poke for NVIDIA (and AMD's) help with analyzing the source of the driver crash until it's resolved, or just tackle it en-masse with an automated script until it crashes in a way that we can get a trace on. It'll definitely get fixed, but it's hard to say exactly when due to the nature of the issue.

Survivor, benjaminjredmond asks, “Will the DodoRex be tamable in this Fear Evolved event?”

Answer:

During Fear Evolved the DodoRex will not be tamable. It currently needs some additional balance work before we’re able to make it so. However it will be making a reappearance sometime later in November, and during that event - you will be able to tame it.

Survivor, DoctorEnema asks, “Will you guys implement a remove paint option from structures and equipment?”

Answer:

We plan to add a new item to the game, “Soap” - and we’ll actually move it forward so we’ll get it in next week!

Survivor, Pammy Pop asks, “Is there any possibility for a VSync option? Some reason my AMD card hates it! Would be nice to disable it.”

Answer:

You can disable VSync by doing the following:

In your GameUserSettings.ini -- add this in:

bUseVSync=False

You can set that to true or false as you need! Additionally, we’ll also add it to the Options UI soon.

Survivor, Snoopy Sniper asks, “Do you mind shedding more light on how console servers will look? Will we be able to switch it from private to public at the whim of the admin?
Will we be able to host a server while we're offline (so others can play on it while you're away)? Like Fallout 4, will console players be able to download mods?”

Answer:

Consoles will have the option to play in "Local Host" mode with the tethering for up to 4 players, and also "Dedicated" mode for up to 70 players which provides a Server Status/Administration Menu but otherwise does not allow that console to play the game. And by the way, the Xbox One version of the game is super fun and on looking target for a release very, very soon ;).

Survivor, Navi asks, “I ask this every week, maybe this time I’ll get lucky! Will we get plants on boats and platform saddles?”

Answer:

Yeah, we’ll go ahead and try to bring that in the next Major Update. At the time it had caused an issue with Plant Species X, however we’ll just get that fixed up instead!

Survivor, Wantman asks, “Will we be able to keep the bats and spiders after ARK: Fear Evolved and will they still be tamable afterwards?”

Answer:

Yes you will be able to keep them and they will be tamable!

Survivor, Frodo-Synthesis asks, “Are the entity IDs going to be kept up with or switched to a new version?”

Answer:

We’ll go ahead and do a pass and get them all up to date in the next Major update. We don’t really use the IDs internally anymore, but I imagine it is more convenient for server admins than using the full item strings.

Survivor, Jassar08 asks, “Can we get some Insight on Gigantosaurus Rage Effect and how will this play into riding one?”

Answer:

The Gigantosaurus will have a special "Rage" meter. If it takes damage, 'Rage' gets added (and will decreases naturally over time), which causes it to regain stamina faster and do exponentially more damage in its own attacks. But if it's Rage meters maxes out, it throws its rider off, will attack friendlies and won’t be able to be ridden until its rage meter cools down again. So the key is to build a bit of Rage if you want it to hit really hard, but not too much so that you’re in danger of being attacked by your own mount.

Survivor, Moh asks, “Will the Gigantosaurus have it’s own mini-platform saddle or even a multi-person saddle?”

Answer:

Nope. We prefer leaving the platform saddles to beasts of burden, rather than the attack dogs. Also the back would be a little too pointy for it to fit nicely :P.

Survivor, Dinotank asks, “In the Dossier it says that Dimetrodon has temperature cooling abilities, so can it be used for maintaining temperatures around eggs for hatching?”

Answer:

Yes they will be able to! They’re like Dino Midwives :P

Survivor, Dinotank also asks, “Will the Oviraptor be able to pick up fertilized eggs? It would be useful if they did when it was too hot or too cold.”

Answer:

That’s a pretty good idea! We’ll go ahead and make them do that.

Survivor, DomiDarko asks, “Will Scorpions and Underwater Creatures be able to mate?”

Answer:

Eventually yes, we’ve got plans for them to be able to mate - however we need to do some more work on their lifecycle before that can happen!

Survivor, lizardwolf asks, “Will you give a push to the Wardrum? Could use some mightier sounds…. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=540150483”

Answer:

Yup! We plan to do a full beefy-sound pass on the game as we get closer to the launch. That said, That War Drum sound mod is pretty damn righteous.. so we’ll get in touch with the author too ;).

Survivor, BreakMeDown4 asks, “What do you personally look forward to most in the future of this game? What are your thoughts on the current state of the game and how do you expect it to differentiate from the end goal?”

Answer:

At present I think we have the basic survival -- except the upcoming diseases system -- and creature systems getting to be where we want them to be. Balancing-wise things are feeling pretty good so far, except that Tamed Dinos are currently overpowered and need to be dealt with in a pre-launch pass.

What's most exciting is getting the proper boss fights, Ascension cycle & long-term character progression, and proper end-game into place, which ties into revealing the story and truth behind the ARK's purpose which are all very exciting prospects for us in the months ahead.

Essentially, the things that make it more than just a great survival game, but also a great mythos, something that will really stay with players -- that's what we're most looking forward to!

And, of course, making the game run a helluva lot faster and consume less memory! ;)

Survivor, Sharkking asks, “Will we have the possibility to craft from remote inventories?”

Answer:

Yeah we’ll probably get to adding that soon.

Survivor, Lesi123 asks, “Can admins get an option to enable a decay timer/feature on their servers that automatically destroys abandoned structures? With no player/admin interaction required”

Answer:

Yup! That’ll actually be in the next Major Update :).

Survivor, Colonel Siberia asks, “Is there an ETA on the Dimetrodons? They’ve been sitting in the Dev Kit for a while.”

Answer:

They should be rolled out to keep you warm or cooled in November!

Survivor, Doug Rattman asks, “What’s going to happen to the Fear Event once it’s over?”

Answer:

It'll make its way back onto the ARK in enhanced form next Fall, but also it will reside in the Dev Kit for Mod Authors to mess with and incorporate into mods as they wish. It'd be easy for a Mod Author to release a Total Conversion that literally IS the Fear Evolved Event, and maybe we'll do that ourselves too as an example ;).

Survivor, Lium asks, “Why did we not receive tamable boas, despite the promises they’d be given with the Fear Evolved in a previous digest?”

Answer:

Sorry guys! They needed a bit more work and balance time to get them to behave how we like. We’re aiming to bringing them around in November :).

Survivor, David Bowie’s Bum asks, “What can we expect from the ocean in future updates?”

Answer:

We have a lot of sea creatures in the works! As well as an expansion of the playable sea area along with a deeper max depth, and a sea Cave-Dungeon. Furthermore, you can also expect an entire Oceanic/Isles ARK ;)

That’s it for this week’s combined Crunch and Digest guys! Don’t forget the Alienware and the special Fear Evolved contests! As always if you’ve got anything to share please get in touch and be sure to follow us on Twitter at @survivetheark, Facebook at www.facebook.com/survivetheark and Reddit at www.reddit.com/r/playark!

Thanks everyone!

Very nice.

I'm very happy to see that you guys agree tamed dinos are overpowered, and will be addressing that. How about giving us the ability to use Mindwipe Tonic on our tames once you get around to doing a comprehensive balance pass? I also hope you'll consider taking some of the randomness out of dino stats... if generic stat values are enough to create diversity between human players, they're enough to create diversity between tames provided you make sure each stat is useful to each creature.

That said...

I'm a little bit concerned about the notion that the survival aspect of the game is almost where you want it to be. Diseases sound interesting, but I certainly hope they won't be Skyrim style "you've got a debuff. Now that you've consumed this potion, you are no longer affected by this debuff."

Food is also far too plentiful. What's the point of foraging for food when you can just eat whatever enemies attack you while you're out gathering resources? The best source of early-game sustenance are the dilos and ants that attack you incessantly... and once you have something that can gather berries your food troubles are over entirely. I don't think anybody wants a Don't Starve level of hassle, but can we at least have a reason to eat something other than berries besides miscellaneous buffs?

Creature-specific meats with different spoil times and nutritional values? Mejoberries actually being more useful as flavoring than food? Seeds and nuts? Dry rations aside from jerky? It would be nice to see hunting expand as a practical pasttime and agriculture gain some use besides churning out buff meals and kibble. (Yeah, I know RP cooking is coming.)

Couple straight answers about game settings, some promises about when a dinosaur is coming out, and more fluff. All in all, nothing really to see here. Back to the game then :)

Glad to hear a couple of Dinos are coming next month, the new spawning zones could use variety. Seeing waaaaaaaaaay too many Paracers in the swamp and I can't walk 10m without stepping in Dilo spit. :P
