Community Contests!

Every week for the foreseeable future we’ll be hosting two contests for our Community Crunch. Remember for this week (and the foreseeable future!) we'll also be accepting entries for the newly introduced: Warpaint images, human and dino tattoos/bodyart for the #ARKArt award as well as bases both on your Brontos and Rafts for #ARKitect! Can’t wait to see the platform bases, the ships and tattoos/bodyart! Also can’t wait to see your new bases in the new biomes!

ARKitect

This is a title given to the Survivor who has created, in our eyes, the best base for the week. Survivors will need to upload their screenshots to the Community Hub, both the Artwork or Screenshot section will suffice and then post them in the designated thread, it’s also possible that we’ll see the screenshots in the hub but posting them in the thread will ensure that they’ll be spotted!

We’ll be judging the bases not on the quality of the screenshot, but on the unique designs, functionality, and the use of in-game tools available to you! At the end of each week, the screenshot for the best base will be featured in our #ARKitect section of the Community Crunch!

The #ARKitect award for Community Crunch 21 goes to…

First place...

And we have a tie!

Titanium has unfortunately hidden these screenshots from anyone but admins, we’ll have him open them up so you can check out how amazing they are!

Great work guys and congratulations as you are this week's ARKitects! We’ll be in touch to get the prizes handled!

Honourable Mentions / Runner ups

We’ve got a few runners up for ARKitect this week too! So big shout-out to them and we’ll be in touch too ;)!

#ARKArt

The second contest which will take place is for the #ARKArt award! This is a title given to the Survivor who has created, in our eyes, the best piece of art for that week using our new Per-Pixel painting system! Similarly to #ARKitect, Survivors will need to upload their masterpiece to the Community Hub, both the Artwork or Screenshot section will suffice and then also post them in the designated thread, it’s also possible that we’ll see the screenshots in the hub but posting them in the thread will ensure that they’ll be spotted!

The #ARKArt award for Community Crunch 21 goes to…

Workshopper Spotlight!

Workshopper: Swords

Survivors, this week we’re joined by Swords and they’re here to answer some questions and talk about their mods with us! Thanks for joining us! Do you think you could introduce yourself to the community, and let us know about what you’re currently working on?

Swords:

Hello, my name is Samson and my online persona is Swords, due to my love of everything medieval, I live in the US city of Seattle. We are coffee loving people. I personally have been waiting for a while for a method of teaching myself how to program and this mod kit does it. It's a fun way to stay engaged and learn something new every day. I'm the creator of NPC Bush Peoples! This mod adds wild human NPCs to the ARK. Everything is a work in progress and changes based on community feedback.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=521028716

Nice to meet you Swords! Have been keeping an eye on your mod for a while. It’s something the Community have really been after, we get a lot of posts, most notoriously in the ARK Digest asking us whether we’d consider doing human-mobs/tribal-AI in the game - right now it’s not something we’re considering but it’s really cool to see modders take a shot at it! Can you tell us more about the mod in particular?

Swords:

The Survivor mobs are tameable through both methods of violent and hand feeding, you can mount them, have them mount you and tossed just like a monkey. They come with custom fitting armor once you tame them you can gear them any way you like. In version 2 I have introduced the NPC fort, which is a bosslike dungeon where you need to kill the Queen inside to get the loot. I’ve also added some extra mobs so you guys should watch out for the wizard who uses long-range torpidity/fireballs/smoke grenades attacks.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=528138268

Oh wow, this is quite an exciting mod! A dungeon with a boss and different types of classes - very different! What else can your subscribers can look forward to?

Swords:

Right now I'm working on randomizing the variety of NPC looks, I started with the skin color now armor and ending with sizes. That's just NPC visuals, overall I don't think this mod will ever be completely done due to all the suggestions I'm receiving, anything and everything are possible once you get the proper workflow down.

Once visuals are done I will be introducing a prisoner capture bounty system, get caught, get dragged back to a fort and imprisoned you will be taken good care of and feed by the NPCs. Hire NPC assassins & bounty hunters for resources to search the map for your player target.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=528138007
That sounds like some pretty advanced AI! Can’t wait to check out the bounty-hunters and prison system when you’ve got them in place. Are you new to modding, or have you had previous experience prior to ARK? and where do you come up with the ideas for the mod?

Swords:

This mod is a learning experience, I started using the unreal engine when the DevKit came out, very frustrating and unforgiving at first but after awhile and some success everything else seems to just fall in place. There's just so much technical information that I can absorb and eventually incorporate into the mod it is truly ridiculous with no real limits besides my own knowledge. This mod is a progression of what I've learned, as time goes on you can expect to see more advance mechanics as I absorb more information and test my limits as a developer.

I get a lot of wild ideas as well as ideas from the community, I then visualize it, search the official mod forums , ask questions on the UE4 answerHUB and post again if needed on UE4 forums, even though they keep telling me to go back to the ARK forums, someone will always answer your questions. Youtube tutorials are very helpful as well, I personally will start a series explaining in detail how to make your own NPC human in the coming weeks ahead, so you guys can look forward to that!

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=528138116

Awesome. I’m sure there are more people who want to work on their own AI and Human NPCs for their mods so that tutorial will be very helpful. Do you have any other tips and tricks for upcoming modders from your own experiences?

Swords:

When following tutorials, try to achieve your goal without any instructions. For myself I felt a sudden click when I actually started understanding what variables where and why they were being used. I read the documentation on everything that I was even remotely unsure of. Don't let crashes discourage you! eventually, you won't get any. This mod is just me taking what's already there and fine tuning it for something else. And also always remember to aim for the head and constantly move in figure eight circles. :P

Thanks for the tips Swords! Really appreciate it, looking forward to how your mod grows and excited for the features you’ve got coming, along with your youtube series! Do you have anything you’d like to say before we wrap this up?

Swords:

Thanks to all my subscribers and the community for the feedback and suggestions they provide about my mod! Really helps me progress and please do keep them coming. If you haven’t checked out my mod, give it a try and feel free to share your input on any issues you come across!

Bit unclear how you find the contest entries. Only hashtags were supplied, but not where to use them or where to submit screenshots, etc.

What are the limits on the in-game painting entries? I love drawing with pixels in Paint Tool Sai, which I can convert and transfer to the game, but does it qualify since it wasn't made in-game, per se?
