Dino Reactions
Hiya, I really love the look and idea of the game, and am super hyped for EA. However one thing that kind of worried me from the trailer was that none of the dino's seemed to react to the human presence? Multiple times through the footage humans just ran straight past dinosaurs. Perhaps these were all tamed dinosaurs and just used to showcase some footage of them, but since it is in-game footage it got me curious.

I understand a little with the Dodo's, I believe they became extinct as they weren't used to having predators and thus were incredibly easy to catch/kill. Something along those lines anyway. I can also understand that maybe a Brontosaurus is so big that it's not really concerned with the smaller creatures running around it's heels.

Not every herbivore is docile though, some are territorial or aggressive like Hippo's, Rhino's, even Elephants. That's kind of how I imagined a Triceratops would be. That if it spotted me perhaps it wouldn't straight out attack but would at-least threaten/taunt me first. That many creatures would also turn and run on sight, others might taunt but not follow up- just move further away, uncomfortable/un-easy in proximity.

Can I expect the dinosaurs in game to actually react to my presence? Will a triceratops want me out of its space or can I really just run straight up-to it and punch it in the face before I see any kind of reaction?

This is what I wonder as well. Something like a Triceratops or Stegosaurus would be territorial, perhaps such animals aren't at the start. Maybe the devs will add adaptive AI so at the start they're docile because they don't perceive you as anything but if you start hunting/attacking them and other members see you do so then the survivors will act accordingly in the future and perhaps offspring (if breeding happens) will have similar behaviors (instinct) as their parents.

As of now they won't really respond to your presence unless their temperament is aggressive. Of course we could say but are they really Dinos? Is this really that scientific pre-historic world? hehe. Though don't worry, we'll plan to continuously improve AI as we go along - the game is still fairly in it's infancy and there's a lot planned. Hopefully we'll be able to get to a point where Dinos are able to react as such, as long time and the development pipeline permits. It would definitely be a really cool thing to have.

I would like to add that I think its awesome you guys put in the Dodo dossier that they're not great as a food source unless you're desperate since irl the Dutch tried eating a handful Dodo when they were stuck on the island but realised it tasted greasy and nasty (they called it dodarsin which means the fat ass). Irl the Dodo became extinct because of the wild animals future Dutch sailors brought onto the island. The Dodo could also defend itself well too although from the looks of the trailer they seem like a comedy act ^^

Thanks for the quick response :D So rare to have developers so involved with a community.

I kind of like how comical the Dodo's seem in this game. Yes it would be cool if they would maybe at least run a little but from the clip it did make me laugh and was something I personally could believe.

I liked how there was one trying to make a getaway and the player is like "Not today!". Also found it funny how the guy with the spear mearly poked one and it fell over. Gotta love rag doll physics :D

Even if a dinos temperament is non-aggressive, don't you think that the dinos should in theory be territorial in the sense that they should become aggressive if you get up all in their faces. Territorial should make medium - larger herbivores e.g. Triceratops, become aggressive, and aggro players in close proximity maybe 25M. Also, maybe if you make a ruckus like jump up and down or make alot of noise they should aggro a little further away. Perhaps if there is a nest in the area, the territorial aggro radius of the dino should increase out to about 50 M.
