Far North East corner of the map, look for a tiny lake on the map. The road you are referring to starts on the north beach and run south. Very beautiful location, one of a kind spot. It's ot for me though, I like a little more excitment around me.
Snowmonkey, that was actually my third spot to go to, when we move away from our current spot, which resides between the red and green spires, on a cliff side. My second option is a clearing with a cave nearby. I had the idea of walling it off and centralizing inside the cave, as it's very big, and I didn't runinto a single mob while in it.
Oh and BTW that trailer showed the PC version. The PS4 will NEVER be able to handle the game looking like that.
It's better to just go up the hillside and then find the trail leading to the valley than finding the actual trail from the beach. And come in off the eastern beach side, it's safer and it's the better side to build on any how.
Those saying it lacks resources haven't really thought things out. The trails leading to the valley very rarely ever have any agro there and there is plenty of bushes, trees and stone to get you going.
I recommend establishing your base on the rock ledge on the Eastern side. That way you can build a wall with a ladder all the way up the cliff face to the top. And up top is all the trees and rocks you'd ever need. If you have a buddy down below, you can drop the loot off the cliffside to him below. If not, going down the ladder isn't difficult at all. It only takes about 15-16 walls to go from the rock ledge to the top. You'll have to build a platform on the top of the cliff with 2 ceiling tiles outward towards the ladder wall. to build 2 more ceiling tiles from the ladder wall to the top of the cliff.
My group plans to build a fort up there as well. There is a second lake a short walk to the north from the top of the cliff. It's a larger lake and has loads of fish in it.
The only thing that area is lacking is metal. But you can find that on the beach, which isn't far. And if you are the point where you need a ton of metal you should have tamed a few dinos to help you get there.
