(edited this part)You don't have to completely start your building with pillars. Instead, place what foundations you can. Once you are unable to build any further with foundations, you can start placing ceilings instead. Place a ceiling that snaps to the foundation. Next you can place a pillar under that ceiling to provide support. Make sure the pillar is centered, and keep building pillars down to the ground.
So now with that pillar, you can build 2 pieces in each direction. On the second piece you are going to need another pillar. You can place pillars UNDER already placed ceilings. Get the pillar under the ceiling, centered. You may have to look down a little to make sure the entire pillar gets under the ceiling (a little will still poke over the top).
You should be able to keep placing pillars under that pillar. Each pillar allows you to building 2 ceilings in each (Straight) direction. It will end up being a pillar every other ceiling.
Hope this helps.

As you see the big building is half built over a hill. What i did was build a ceiling and then build a pillar from top to down- jumping a section at a time. Its tedious but it works. Also pillars snap everywhere- even if there is a small gap you handle your camera until it shows greena nd you snap it.
