Can't find Sarge either, he swam off to kill something and now he's lost.
Though, there's also been a problem of disappearing backpacks in general. I couldn't find my backpack on land after dying a few feet from my base earlier, and I've had the problem quite a few times. So, that could be your problem, too.
Sure the way you exaggerated it is a little too easy, but the death marker you get to see once (and hopefully screenshot) is hardly accurate and very hard to find if you are not familiar with the area in which you died.
Not being able to see around upon your death (Seems fine) also doesn't help in conjunction with the "around here marker" as you have no time to search for a quick landmark by your body. Perhaps fading vision to give the player 10 seconds to take in their surrounding (Im next to 2 pointy rocks and a really big tree with the mountain to the north -- sort of thing).
