How hard is this game?
Hello, been doing some research into this game and I had a couple questions.

How grindy is this game? Will it take me a long time to get established?

PvP, I love it. I heard your character persists "asleep" while you're logged off. Does getting killed make you completely start over like DayZ?

Last one: This one is a bit more opinion related i guess. How are the devs? Are they trustworthy? Do their past games get a decent amount of support? I ask this because I dislike preordering and paying into alphas and betas. HOWEVER, I looooove dinosaurs. So I kind of want to make this an exception.

1. Kinda of grindy. You spend most of your time gathering materials to craft and you happen to level up while doing that.

2. You lose all your stuuf. But you keep your crafting recipes and pets.

3. The devs communicate with the community, they warned us the game would have bad peformance at first unlike other indie devs. And also they have been updating the game non-stop to make it so we can all play it. I think we can trust them.

Devs are always around even right now during week ends and providing daily patch to the community(i'have been surprised too)
The game isn't "hard" as dayz and you can survive day and night if you don't derp auroud. Meanwhile some mob can poison you and kill you quickly, if you have a friend around you will be invicible in PvE.
For the PVP, not much differrence with other survival game, still people or nice but depends on who you meet. If you play for 2-3 hours who will be imune to lvl 1 character who just want to Destroy the Game.

Hope it helped

Is crafting a necessity to fully enjoy the game? Like, can I just build a small hut and grab a dino and enjoy the game just as much? Or will I just be pwned constantly without a decent base and tons of dinos?

You start out with the only the ability to make a stone pickaxe. As you level up you can unlock more recipes so it takes a while before you can make a base. You won't be pwned constantly because first of all since this world is pretty dangerous people don't wander as much, people still wander but not as much.

You don't need to worry as much about getting pwned. People in this game are more likely to work together. I have only been attacked by another player ONCE. I even occasionally just walk past a player only trading hellos.

The character stays when you are off. Unlike other survival games that have this, your house won't protect you from the other 20 percent of people on the server at all. Oddly enough, even in pve, so beware of people running towards your house with a dinasaur coming at them.

The optimisation is poor, but the devs have released so many patches over the last few days, it won't be long now until it get's fixed.

In tribes, you will level up alot faster. So fast that it's pretty unfair in comparison to solo players who will feel the grind. The grind is real for solo. THE GRIND IS REAL.

Ah, so to avoid grind, teaming up is fairly necessary? That's a bit unfortunate for me, because I tend to always be a solo player.

Do tribes work in the same sense of Clans/Guilds I would from steam groups/websites? Or is this an in-game menu thing where I can join a group of players that have a Tribe.

Tribes are all about working together, you share you buildings, your dinos, everything.

I have been playing on single-player for a few hours and I have not really needed to grind. I just tamed a parasaur as a matter of fact. http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/536273045197098793/C89B200D5A4F0AAEC1F58959572CAED025FD14EB/

You only join tribes by being invited. Also they are contained to their server.

Tribes are ingame, and it's pretty simple to communicate throught the game thanks to the voice chat and all the different colors to see who is in your tribute.
As a solo player too i unsterstand your strugle. I have joined a server yesterday start derping around and finnally met some folks who invited me in a tribes . It did not slow down either the fun or my progression and was pretty fun. the game Will be fantastic in both ways of playing it solo or in group.
