BLACKSCREEN FIX FOUND
My blackscreen issue is fixed, i verifyd my game integrety cache in properties of ARK in the library, it resets the grapics settings but thats easily changed.

i don't know if this works for everyone but i thought id share it anyway,
really hope it works because i know how annoying it was.

To do that go: Library > right click ARK > Properties > Local files > verify game integrety cache

A quicker an probably much easier way is to go to x86/Steam/ steamapps/common/ARK/ShooterGame/Saved/Config/WindowsNoEditor and delete the GameUserSettings.ini

The game will then start with default settings. I have been using this to get around the black screen bug aswell. It usualy boots me to the menu first time I try to load a server, but works the second time.

Well actually when you verify the game for me it downloaded a new file that wasn't there before. Anyway this solution 100% worked for me and my 2 friends. +++++++++++++++++

Safe your time and try it only after a patch was released

This worked for me. I was trying to join a server before I did this (maybe an hour ago), and I kept getting the black screen. All three times I tried to join. After I did this (verified the cache), I was booted to the main menu on the first try, then successfully logged on the second try. So, cudos, OP.

how long does it take?

None of these solutions have worked for me unfortunately. The black screen occurs anytime I try to play the game in Full Screen mode. I'm on a Razer Blade 2014 - Windows 8.

I have the same problem, and want to try the different solutions mentioned above. The first I want to try, is this:
Library > right click ARK > Properties > Local files > verify game integrety cache

But what "Library" is meant? Is that a folder on the harddrive? Please give me some more information so I can proceed with that suggestion above. Thanks.

@Hirnsausen, Library is where you can see all your games in the steam client

Thanks, that was a good help. Still one problem remains. my Steam client is in German language, and of the four buttons on that Local Files" tab, none of them has a German text equivalent to the English "Verify Game Integrity Cache". My German buttons have labels like (in English):
- Search in Local Files
- Safe Game Fiels
- Delete Local Game Files
- Check Game Files for Error

Which of the four buttons would be what in the English client is the button "Verify Game Integrity Cache"? Or has that option been removed from the latest Steam client?

Seems, my choice of the 4th button was the right one. Now I get a message, that 2 faulty files were found and are being requested again. Downloading now 3.3 GB, but that is somethign that gives me hope. Upon start of the game, I will know if there was been the problem that caused the black-out of my screen each time. If not, I will continue with the 2nd option listed in this thread (deleting "GameUserSettings.ini").
