Get fence foundation. Place them around your stuff and then put thatch or wooden (whatever you use) walls on it. Both foundation and walls will connect with each other.

Use the wood fence foundation. It will snap againstthe Dino gate walls. This allows you to build walls on them and continue extending it using the wood fence foundations.

Enjoy gathering all the wood for it though. I do suggest you to tame a parasaur or something else that you can ride and has a lot of weight, so it can be filled up with wood.

the issue is if you're not on a flat area you cannot see the wall foundations in the ground

Sorry for slight necro here but this has to one of the hardest things to do in game, building wise, I have found so far. This is made worse if you are putting them on a slight slope with some vegetation on it. The foundations do not snap like other building items, or at least I couldn't get them to when I tried putting up about 30 of the blumin things last night. Not only that put the previously placed foundation can be almost fully submerged underground, making finding the end of it impossible. The only way I found that helped a little was to lay on the floor and shuffle about like that. It was still a massive PITA, as they don't snap but instead seem to try and place themselves exactly where you don't want them to.

Do it at night so the green 'prototype' of where you are going to place the next foundation piece is better visible to the green foliage you are trying to place it in.

If you are on a steep hill, sometimes it's impossible to snap fence foundations. However, you don't actually have to snap them. With a bit of practice you can line them up just fine with the previous wall.

yea, super necro.

we've all done it, though.

But, after so many hours into ark... now-a-days when I catch myself trying to do this I stop and think "wtf am I try to build a wall Here?" and rethink my position....

you can usually blame poor planning. And, im not trying to be rude, cuz I do it 75% of the time, too. Often you need to rethink your base/fence position entirely to get a good fit. Of course, over-crowding is a large issue (or so I read) on official servers... which is why I play on private; where there is generally much more real estate to choose from...

But, there really are quite a few large 'clearings' that are Decently flat enough to achieve a good wall; without any visual hiccups that hills promote. Often you really need to clear the area of debri and inspect the ground floor; fly-overs don't cut it.

my 2c.
