Sometimes my spears last for ages, sometimes I get things happening like what you describe.
I mainly notice, the spears tend to break when I miss my target and hit rocks or the ground.
Slingshots are great for high health things. You can back peddle turtles and Anklos pretty easily, then just finish them with your axe.
I use the spears for dilos. Usually it only takes one or two to kill one, and you can often recover them afterwards.
I definitely agree with the strategical spots for spearing, harder or softer and think it should be that way, however, as I said in a previous reply, taking a stab at air and having my spear splinter on me is quite overkill, that or I really need to stop making spears out of Styrofoam.
