Spears
Spears, IMO they break way too easy sometimes, it seems completely random, on occasion I can break 2 spears with 2 attacks, it makes combat and hunting with them pretty lame. They should have a durability like the tools, for something that breaks so easily and so randomly and can be thrown, they cost too much to make. The tools don't cut it as melee weapons and we need a real solid early game melee weapon like the Spear, or perhaps at least allow us to make a better version of the spear designed for melee combat that doesn't snap like a twig.

Yeah I feel thesame thing. It breaks randomly in my situation. One time I can keep stabbing with it the other time stab two times.

Agree!

I was thinking that you throw them more than actually use them as a melee weapon (use melee as a backup) because I don't think they break as easily and you can pick them up after you throw them. Same with arrows. Make a stack of them and try it out.

It also depends on what your attacking. If you hit a turtle in its' shell, its gonna break. Phiomia are also pretty spear-resistant.
And I'm pretty sure there are tougher spears down the line (looking at the engram chart, but haven't got that far yet)

I'm guessing you need to research the basic spear as a pre-req to better ones? Seems to be the case for other things like buildings which is a tad annoying. I planned on being nomadic until I research wood because its better than thatch but it seems like one is forced to research thatch to make wood buildings and it will be the same for metal :/

I think one is also forced to research the slingshot to unlock the bow too.

That's my point, there is no real viable EARLY GAME melee weapon, Spears are best thrown and even then they can be lost, which also makes them expensive. Regardless of whether we get better spears later on in the game or not, we need a better melee weapon early on for the sake of fun and gameplay.

Me and my friends have gotten bows etc and still no decent melee weapons.

Make some basic clothes, create few axes, only 3 or 4 spears go to inland and just farm squishy dinosaurs this way you will reach levels very fast.

I would consider the stone hatchet to be fairly decent from what I have seen. I understand what you mean though. I think the devs wanted to go for realistic tech in regards to primitive weaponry since irl it was spears, hatchets etc. I haven't seen a streamer highlight any of the higher tier weapons other than guns but I would like to see some of the other melee weapons. Btw does the melee damage stat apply to melee weapons as well or is it solely for fists. If the latter then its a pretty useless stat unless someone makes a boxing ring.

Spears are meant to break easy! Its even in their description. They are a thrown weapon, and they are not expensive. You farm really easy the flint and the wood. Also you will get ironspears later, they dont break easy!

Break easy, what like break 2 spears in 2 hits on a Dilo? that's way too easy, I made stronger spears as a kid. That's my point, they should break, but not as easy as they do now.

that are ♥♥♥♥♥♥ sticks with flint attached to it with a rope, wanna see how it not breaks if a 2 ton trice rans into it. more durable iron spears are ingame also, but you cant throw them.

I feel like I have to make a new spear after any serious fight, or after killing several easy dino's.

I agree with Lee, I can understand progression from wood to metal, but it could really use a little added durability. I wanted an early game melee weapon (and a spear with some range to stab with is good. When you're resource-starved starting out, I didn't want to throw it, miss and disarm myself. I'd rather stab with a spear.)

I could understand if say, a trike snaps your spear in two... but I was breaking a spear on a single low-level Dilo, and not missing hits. It's just too flimsy.

It'd also be a lot less tedious if it would auto-craft when I hit the hotkey like it does for crafting tools like the hatchet. Spear never seems to want to recraft like that for me.

ive killed 2 dilos with the same spear and it hasnt broke i do belive it is random for when it breaks

Kidding me? That spear is made of a random weak wood, ofcourse it will break.
It does well versus sensitive weak skinned repltiles etc. But anything with harder skin or shell, it will break really fast. Which is totally fine and realistic.

Only thing is broken that you can actually knock out some dinos by fist fighting..
I also killed 3 Carno easily with a hatched, without taking any serious damage. Just run around his/her legs and hit hit hit hit. He will just spin around and never hit you.
You can do this vs many dinos.

The last thing you spoke of is something they need to change tbh. No way should someone be taking out the creatures that easily.
