- The Right Hand.
There are further unlocks that provide inclined, vertical and cross shaped stone pipes. Thought the same thing but eventually unlocked them, and now have pipes running up the beach and up a cliff to my base.
Looks a bit messy, but functional.
1st tier: Straight, inlet and tap (so you can make basic irrigation on the beach/pond if you want.
2nd tier: 45 degree incline, vertical and cross shape pipe (unlocked a few levels higher than the first stone ones, to make more advanced systems)
Edit: I found the incline one sometimes went into the ground, but if I stood where the previous section of pipe was just laid, crouched and looked up it worked, most went into place pretty easily though. Hopefully that helps. Terrain sometimes doesn't play nice with the path you want to take.

But this *IS* a connection issue. Can't connect the irrigation pipes....
Thank you all for the replies!! I had no idea there was more that I need to unlock. I was excited to not have to run back to the river every few minutes for water. Oh well looks like a few more levels to go. Thanks again! Enjoying this game to death!
No problem, regarding running around for water constantly, this might also help:
