Controller Setup - Tips!

For those of you who may be be using a controller (gamepad) or are thinking about it, here is some information on how it works and button functions beyond what is given to you in your options menu under the "Gamepad Controls" tab.

Looking at the layout under that tab you will see:

Select - Push to talk if you have a mic
Start - Is your main menu (Not your inventory)

L2 - Targeting
R2 - Fire
L1 - Item Selector
R1 - Melee Attack

Left Stick - Movement
** Also controls your mouse pointer when it comes up in game **
L3 - Used once while moving is Sprint

Right Stick - Camera
R3 - Crouch

Pad - Quick slot Items *numbers 1-4 on your hotbar*
1 - Up, 2 - Down, 3 - Left, 4 - Right

Y - Use
B - Action Selector
A - Jump
X - Reload

So if you have noticed, the above functions are pretty basic and you will figure whit out while playing. Here are some of the "tips" or game mechanics I would like to share.

R2 - Fire
*If equipped with a ranged weapon, you will fire. Holding, then realsing with slingshot/bow will give you more power.
*If you are equipped with a melee weapon, functions the same as R1

R1 - Melee Attack
*Just what the title says, your melee attack
*If you have a slingshot equppied, you puch. Bow, you melee with your bow, etc

L2 - Targeting
*Targeting?!! don't see any targeting box/lock on box in this game.....
*If you press this while you have your spear equipped, this will make you throw it.
*if you press and hold this while equipped with a ranged weapon (slingshot/bow/gun), used to aim. Keep in mind you will have to still use R2 Fire, to fire your weapon

Okay now een more in depth.....

Y - Use

This is the [E] option when you walk up to things. You will see a description of what will happen when the press the Y button([E]). At times you will see a 2nd option as well - (Hold for more options). Press and hold your Y button and a Radial Menu will pop with options. With your left stick you "Highlight" which option you want to perform and release the Y button to perform that action. ---->> Now lets say you chose an action by mistake, but do not want perform it. As long as you DO NOT release your Y button and wait a few seconds, your option will no longer be highlighted, you can release the Y button and you will do nothing. Yay!

*If you press and hold Y while gathering plants, you will gather up to 3X. You will need to press again for another 3X.
*if you are interacting with nothing, Y will do just that..... nothing.

B - Action Selector

Pressing and holding B will bring up your "Action Selector" Radial menu. You will use your left stick to choose which action to perform.

*If you only press your B button, you will do nothing

They have recently added update to controller for when riding certain dinos.

Before there was no way to pick a person/small dino while riding a tera/argentavis with a controller or do your rightclick function for dino. You now can :)

L2 - will do your right mouse click function. Which is roar (trex)/headbutt (carno)/pck up (tera/Arg)

So when I pick up a dino/tribemate with my arg, I can drop them with the same button I picked them up with, LT, but when I pick up an enemy player IT WONT LET ME DROP THEM! PERIOD! I have to jump off my bird before it dies and then we both die wtf is going on?

I have done w/ tribemates/dinos/pvplayers I'm not sure what is going in your situation. It may be a glitch/bug. Has it happened more than once? If it is something that is on going, i would post in the right message board so the devs can look into it.

I use logitech atm, never tried using a PS3 controller. I would suggest doing a search on the web. Best of luck.

controller you are using? if your using a logitech make sure you're not hitting the mode button by accident, that will flip the pad/stick around at times, maybe that is it? if not, i'm sorry but I would not know why that would be happening. Maybe post something with devs, though I haven't seen them mention anything in terms of controller issue support at all

Other important notes:
Holding R3 (Crouch) will put you prone instead (X button on the keyboard), and on a ptera, R3 performs a barrel roll.
In the water, A makes you rise and R3 makes you descend.
A is also the land button for fliers.
The R2 and L2 buttons will scroll inventories up and down.

i have a microsoft wireless xbox360 controller, and a alienware alpha.

No one actually tells you how to enable the controller instead of mouse. Can anyone help me with this? Currently i am using my mouse, id rather use my xbox controller. HELP!!

FYI for those with controller issues, this might help you out: My controller (XB1 Controller & Steam Controller) only seems to work with Ark if I launch the game from within the Steam HUB. If I launch from the Windows desktop neither controller will work in-game. Hope this helps someone out with their issues.
