Can you build on water with pillars ( supports )

Title. There's a spot I want to build @ the southern isles, that is surronded by land, but in the middle there is a small lake that has fishies in it.

Is there anyway to build over water, via wooden support beams?

Yes, I built my base half on water/half on ground using wooden pillars and putting ceiling on them. The pillars' ends look ugly on the floor that way (or maybe there's another way to put them somehow a bit higher, so the ends don't stick out of the floor, didn't try it).
Made all fish disappear from the lake, lol. I guess it's the spawn blocking near players' structures thing, so my plans of getting an unlimited source of meat were ruined. :D

This sounds like a cool idea. I haven't heard of building on pillars, but I think you can lay foundation at the bottom of water and thenjust build walls up.
