Problem is the material scaling is crazy. A max quality item currently requires thousands of each to make.
Tested by giving myself an Ascendant Metal Pick. The repair cost was problably 100x higher than what you would get from using it. Yes it ate rocks in 1-2 wacks, but after using it on a few rocks it already required over 100 ingots to fix :P
Edit:
Just for fun I gave myself the highest possible quality blueprint of the Sabertooth Saddle.
37588 Hide
20090 Fiber
2592 Metal Ingots
It currently has 674.3 armor
Obviously all this will change. The current cheat command for giving items has a quality range from 1-100 and it varies a lot at what number items become Ascendant.
My guess is item balancing and stuff will come later
Why invest your points in unlocking Engrams when the best stuff is only able to be found via blueprints? Sounds like the only[/it] wise use of engram points is for structures, as the dropped patterns are no different than earned engrams.
Granted you would have to be lucky to get the drops in the first place...
