Pretty much.
If you have a 'cold' indicator (snowflake), your food will drain rapidly if you sprint, and only slightly faster if you're walking or not moving. If you are freezing (ice cube) your food will drain rapidly regardless of if you are sprinting or not (and even faster if you sprint).
The same is true for 'hot' and 'burning' with water consumption.
The takeaway is to not be an impatient prick, wear comfortable clothing, and pick a suitable activity for the weather, such as fishing in really hot weather or staying inside if it's stupid cold out (or wearing leather and/or buffing your Fortitude). Save sprinting for emergencies unless you're 'comfortable' (no icons)
I love everything about this game, but the food consumption (especially when you are offline) is simply no fun and demotivates me to play.
As mentioned elsewhere, it's really easy to feed yourself. Dodos, Dilos and Coals are really easy hunting targets. Bushs don't even move and need nothing but a free hand to grab some berries (tipp: holding a torch allows one to gather berries in the dark). Pets help a lot to hunt even more ressources especially food. I can especially recommened Raptors for taming, the effort/benefit is really good. Attack a "pork", wait for the raptor to kill it and loot for ~20 raw meat.
With a preservation bin you can even store up food for when you relog, or in a tribe some can go hunt for food, store in the house and everyone else can just take some steaks with them when they bring in their share of work.
Conclusion:
Feeding yourself is rather too easy than too hard.
*sarcasm* But its very realistic *end sarcasm*
Whats funny is they are going for realistic, you don't need to eat that often after sprinting... Water I will give you but not having to eat every 2 seconds after a sprint is just plan dumb ESP when your chugging down steaks.
When it's cold, put on warmer clothes and/or hold a torch. If you're still cold, get indoors. Unless you have a lot of food on you, don't sprint around when you're cold.
Also press 'Z' to manually poop when your food icon is light green. It seems to decrease faster (and increase slower from eating) when it is light green.
And lastly, there are more things to eat than just steaks. Whenever you're running around press 'E' when near bushes to snatch a few berries as you go by. You'll barely need steaks at all if you use those berries. They have the added benefit of replenishing water too.
Yeah there are more things to eat but lets get real. I never see any runner chugging down berries/meat during a long run. IF anything water is needed. Remember these devs are going for realistic. And its pretty dumb to see a hunger bar drop that quickly.
