E:D, Star Citizen, both $45+ for early access. Plus this game is having 2+ patches a day and continuous talk from the devs. Unlike anything I ever saw from rust/dayz but I never hopped on the zombie survival bandwagon.
Marketing. Look at the release period for this game - It coincides with the release of a film from a franchise that hasn't been seen in over a decade - Jurassic Park. People are getting their love for dinosaurs on once more, and unlike other contenders to the crown (The Stomping Lands, and to a lesser degree, The Hunter: Primal, and Orion: Prelude), it seems that the team behind this game is not only capable, but exceptionally interested in getting this running smoothly.
Add this to the fact that the game is actually rather good. Maybe it doesnt have new mechanics, maybe it's not pretty, but the fun is certainly there. Just like Minecraft is fun because it's almost like playing with lego when you were a child, ARK is fun because what 10 year old boy hasn't taken his favorite action figure, and tried to finagle its legs around the back of a plastic dinosaur. People riding dinosaurs is awesome.
Game quality isn't determined by realism (Minecraft still looks the same as it did at the start) new mechanics (Don't lie: There's no new mechanics that aren't new weapons in shooters), or new concepts (WoW's been running with that universe for years now). It's determined by how much fun you have playing them. (Minecraft is fun, as much as I despise shooter fans, I won't deny that they have tons of fun playing them, WoW is fun if you've got the mindset).
And people are having fun here. So, there's my perspective. That clear things up a bit?
The game has one of the most incredible and beautiful game worlds Ive seen in many years of gaming, not to mention really neat looking/acting dinosaurs. The survival aspects are good, as well as the crafting. Its early access, so not fully optimized of course, but the devs are very active and constantly improving and fixing things in an already playable game(as long as your PC can handle it).
You might want to not call other early access gamers morons(some of the best gaming times Ive had come from early access stuff) when you also ask if the game has naked anime girls in it...kind of makes you sound like a little prepubescent brat child.
Hmm, you might be right hehe.
Hate to say it, but when there are games out there for $60 and $70 dollars, some that suck pretty bad for that amount of money, $20 isn't much at all. For a lot of us, it's an hour or two of work that ends up paying for hundreds of hours of entertainment.
And it's fun for several reasons (many of which are the same reasons other games of this nature are fun), but the ones that go beyond any other "survival games" I've seen are, dinosaurs.. rideable content.. pets.. FLYING mounts.. loot beyond just grabbing it out of dead critters (the constant supply drops are nice).. extensive crafting system (better than most survival games I've tried; there might be better out there, but _I've_ not played them).. and the list goes on and on.
And so far, not only are the lack of hackers nice, but having the option of SINGLE PLAYER is -the reason- I bought it. Some days I don't want to deal with racist pricks spewing hate filled language, or brain dead douchebags that think talking about rape in video games is acceptable... and when I run into those kinds of useless pieces of ♥♥♥♥, I can retire to my single player game and enjoy myself without them. ... the internet is full of scumbags and the vile excrements of humanity, it's nice being able to have the option of not dealing with them.
