"Fence Foundation' and Construction snap points
So I've spent the better part of today creating a fairly sizeable wall to enclose the site of my future settlement and I've encountered something during construction that whilst not a bug, is really very limiting, and I wanted to make it available for discussion, see what other people think.

So, in this screenshot | http://imgur.com/Yr0rmtz | you can see the rear side of the wall I mentioned. Each section (excluding the gate) is created from a fence foundation, then three wooden walls stacked on top of each other and the top piece is a windowed wall (the idea being you can open the window to look out/shoot at things).

The wall as is, works fine, however my original intention was to place a row of horizontal platforms (ceiling pieces or catwalks or hatch pieces or something) along the back of the wall at the top of the third piece of wall, approximately across the location of the red line in the screenshot. This row of horizontal pieces would function as a walkway across the wall that would be accessible from ladders and provide means to peer through the top row of windows out at the area in front of the wall.

Here's the rub. having built the wall as you see it in the screenshot, there's simply no way to achieve my stated goal at all.

Fence foundations apparently do not have provision for "foundation support" anywhere except directly upwards from the base. This means that I can't simply attach a horizontal walkway perpendicular to the wall where I had intended because I receive a "Cannot place X, requires nearby foundation support." message. This is frustrating, but I can accept that a fence foundation Isn't really designed for what I was trying to do with it, so I would be able deal with it, BUT, there's another problem that's REALLY getting in the way of me finding a solution.

Since it seems that I need foundation support underneath my proposed horizontal walkway in order to make it work, I set to work experimenting with various methods of establishing a foundation behind the base of the wall. The problem I encountered is that regardless of what method I attempted to use to establish a foundation for my walkway, NONE of them would snap to the existing wall structure. They seem incapable of directly connecting to the wall I have built.

I can place a floor foundation or wooden pillars on the ground close by the base of the wall, but upon raising them to the required height, I discovered that since they're not actually "snapped" or connected to the wall in any way, the foundation support that they provide isn't associated with the wall, and thus I still can't attach a walkway to it.

For the sake of comprehensiveness, I DID in fact try and construct a separate structure using foundations and a walkway that attempted to follow the contour of the wall closely enough to serve the same purpose, but it didn't work very well. The pieces weren't able to be placed at the right height given the dimensions of the wooden pillars and the fact that a flooring foundation piece is approximately one third the height of the already existing wall piece at the bottom of the wall. The result was a gigantic mess that was partly functional at best and mostly useless at worst.

Short of demolishing the entire wall and reconstructing it (zzz) using actual flooring foundations at the base (which would generate a couple of other problems, some practical, some aesthetic), there doesn't seem to be a way for me to build my walkway.

This seems a little shortsighted to me and i was wondering if anybody knows of a method I might have missed to achieve what I'm looking to do? I'd be interested in hearing some feedback on how this works, or alternatives, or even just what you guys think about how the construction system works in general so far.

Have you tried building fence foundation that snaps to the already existing ones, pointing inwards to your base? So they'd be at a 90 degree angle. And from there build pillars which you later on put up a catwalks or ceilings?

Thanks for your suggestion Euxz :) I have indeed tried this, i can snap additional fence foundations to the base of the wall pointing at a 90 degree angle to it, and i can then build walls attached to those new fence posts up to the required height, but for some reason I don't seem to be able to put a roof that bridges across the raised walls, I still receive the "requires nearby foundation support" message.

This lack of foundation support occurs even when i create a "box" from three additional joined fence foundation pieces on the back side of the wall. It just doesn't seem to want to let me place a horizontal piece.

When I was building my house I couldn't put up a wall due to lack of foundation, I put a pillar under the ceiling the wall was supposed to go on top of and I could later on place the wall. I believe pillars can be placed without any type of foundation.

I didnt real all of the post because of headache right now.
I suggest using pillars, then when catwalk is placed remove them from the base up, you basically only need the upper part of them to count as support.
Until we get proper static in the game that is.^^
