This obviously is harder to do on massive pvp servers where you probably don't want to draw attention to yourself but even if you're just roaming around on foot and directly talking to people through the mic you can probably arrange trades for fiber pretty easily. I know when I was first playing I tossed out thousands of fiber because it was annoyingly clogging inventories not quite realizing how much we'd need it later.
We thought that too at first but eventually you need tons of it for advanced saddles, construction, and other stuff - and/or you start using dinos to get berries and you get no fiber that way.
