I think they're programmed to 'run to safety' after taking a certain amount of damage. I once saw one fighting a Trike, then accidentally(?) attack a Bronto that wandered next to the fight. This aggro'd two other nearby Brontos, causing them all to start fighting the Spino. It fought them for a while, then started to run away from them. Brontos seem to have pretty big 'chase target' ranges, so the Spino didn't get far before they caught up to it. The Spino then got stuck between them and eventually died.
We noticed that when trying to put down 2 rexes, also put them at the bottom of a ridge so we could stand on top and conveniently pump them with narc arrows. however, they just did not want to budge. When then going primeval and doing a runny-shooty-runny (kiting), they quite quickly gave way and fell asleep.
Suppose this is some sort of side-effect of not damaging things through walls, just that here a ledge is counted as wall. Would´ve been too easy, would it....
However, if you had a group of 50 people, all pelting the thing with rocks at the same time? That would knock it out faster, and defeat the "runaway" AI? The key to this line of thinking is that it seems like slingshots are not only cheaper to shoot, but also allow you to keep your narcotics for use maintaining the torpor while feeding to tame.
Sadly, it seems like the only truly reliable strategy here is to team up, prepare piles of narcotics, and play conservatively. I keep catching myself trying to find "easier" methods of doing things that are not only harder, but get me killed in the process. That's the fun, I guess. Survive. Who knew?
It took me 50+ tranq arrows for a lvl 60. Also looked like it took close to 2000 narcotics and 7-8hrs to get it. Do your best to get it stuck on a cliff or something or it will break your armor.
low lvl spino isn't hard solo with tranqs and a few stacks of narcotics.
On topic of long tames and casual playtimes, you don´t necessarily need a spino or rex. The longest tame I did was probably a 60 rex and a 45 bronto at the same time, was quite the effort and it was only 2 of us. however if you have a tribe with a number of people, you can take shifts, you dont need to be there for the whole thing. Else as a casual, you´re not likely going to need a top level rex/spino, lower level rexes are actually quite quick to tame (quickest was 1 hour for us). Alternatively, stick to sabres if you want a high level one, tamed a 90 today, took 2.5 hours with about a third of that tame done with prime (was in a terrible spot to bring it in).
I have not tested this personally, but I believe the conclusion was that more damage = more torpor. The crossbow deals more damage.
