Spears are completely impractical in their current state.
Currently, spears durability vary immensely, and i'm not sure if this is intentional or not. Sometimes, I can get 30-40 hits out of one, but often - much too often; every 4th or 5th spear - they break on the first hit.

This can be a real pain in the <3<3<3 when you are in a real tight squeeze and you're down to your last spear.

Discuss,

And as always,

Stay Classy.

30-40 hits out of one spear? I wish. I rerolled a character so as not to waste points on getting an engram for the most useless weapon in the game after my third incident like this;

Craft 5 spears. Go hunting. See low level Dilo. Attack. All 5 spears break on first hit. Dilo still alive. I die.

Spears desperately need a durability bar, even a small one to guarantee a minimum of hits out of it. They're too expensive and heavy to carry around a dozen of the things or just constantly throw at enemies.

Spears are entirely worthless as far as I can tell. There's almost no scenario where I'd choose to use a spear over my fists or a hatchet/pickaxe. They weigh a ridiculous amount as well. The pike is great when you can make that, but yea, the spear is in desperate need of a durability bar.

If I would get 30-40 hits from a spear I would think it was a bug, I dont think that I've ever had a spear last more than 10 hits, and typically its around 5, sometimes only 1 hit.

What I would like it as kerradon says, a durability bar.
Or maybe even just a segmented bar with 10 segments, so you can choose to throw in instead of the 10th hit.
Lowering their weight is also something that would be nice, because currently they are way way way too heavy compared to how long they may or may not last.

Agreed. They are completely useless. Not even worth wasting the required engram points to unlock.

break every 4/5 shot for me so i dont craft anymore. Too much ressource for a useless item. Same that sleeping bag. Destroy after one use. i never craft this item

The benefit of the spear is the long reach, and higher damage.

The downside is obviously that they are as durable as a toothpick, and weigh as much as a megalodon. It doesn't even make sense how much spears weigh, when the components put into the damn spear weigh significantly less than the spear itself.

Where did the extra weight come from?
Wolf Jun 12, 2015 @ 5:23am
Weight could definately be reduced to 2 or 4 or so. If they increase durability 10 might be fine though.

Stop making your spears from balsa wood...

seriously they need a durability upgrade.
Zothen Jun 12, 2015 @ 5:25am
Spears are fine for being stone spears. Usually I carry 5-8 around with me and everythings dandy!
Sabbath Jun 12, 2015 @ 5:26am
I agree only on the weight being to much, the break problem is not a problem for me. They do more dmg than the pick or the axe. I also keep 5 on me at all times. they normaly break when your doing a head shot try not to hit in the head move around and try and hit the spitters in the sides.
TopDoge Jun 14, 2015 @ 1:02am
Spears aren't in need of a durability bar. They'd be fine as is if the crafting cost was half what it is now, and they had a weight of 2.
Splinterfuzz Jun 14, 2015 @ 1:04am
I found them plenty useful when leveling up, you can go spears or slingshot neither is a bad choice. The key with spears is to carry 3-4 of them just like how you have to keep a steady supply of rocks for the slingshot. Though as said above they do get heavy when carrying more than one but I still managed to do just fine, I'm now at level 42 with my spear character running around with a deadly pike.
Nucleotides Jun 14, 2015 @ 1:04am
While spears themselves are pretty crap early and it's better to use a sling shot if you can, or a bow. The Metal pike (the next in the spear line) is freaking amazing and you get it at level 25. It may seem like a useless point but it's worth in the long run. I'm 54 now and I still keep one on me at all times.

Now that there are pikes I'm not sure this is true (they have a spear requirement)

Spears are just luck but I normaly only break one every like 20 hits.Easy to make and for a while I was throwing them so made them in bunches. Its a cheap spear it should break easy, and you unlock the much much better, and its a req for it. Trust me far worse points to put points into, no need to reroll.
