i can confirm. requires level 45 for saddle though (and requires a smithy, and 10 metal ingots)

Any river or mountain look for black rocks more chance on mountain but more danger up there

To gather metal I typically go up and down the beaches of rivers and break all the smaller rocks (not the tiny ones but the larger ones) with a metal pick. Not all of the rocks yield metal but even one rock yield will cover the cost of repairing your pick plus more. Generally I can get 40+ metal per pick. Bear in mind you want to either a. increase your carry capacity significantly and/or b. bring a pack animal as metal weighs a ton.
can anyone link a picture of these rocks that give metal ive heard they are black ? :S

They look like black gumdrops, almost a pure smooth dome.

You're looking for medium sized shiny rocks in streams/rivers/beach locations.

I've worked out that any rock that gives flint will not give metal, so don't waste your time or pick if you find start to get flint.

That's from my brief look at metal from rocks anyways.

Caves are full of rocks containing metal, but it can be quite dangerous.

Fun tip, don't knock the flint. The spark powder can be used as a long-lasting combustible for fires. It'll be handy for cave dives and mountain trips away from lumber.

Both left and right rocks here are metal yielding. Notice the domed smoothness and size.
