Question about Chitin/Keratin farming
So i'm farming these to make my argent saddle, just curious;

1. Do metal tools let you retrieve more of these from them or only allow you to harvest them faster?

and secondly

Does harvesting with a dinosaur also result in you obtaining less? I notice that for example manually hacking something will get you more meat than opposed to gnawing it till it dissapears

Reason I ask is because I have a high level carno that mashes things up and want to know the fastest method of getting all dat chitin/keratin

any help appreciated, thanks

Not really, You bump the damg on a saber and you will get far more then with a metal tool. My saber has 550% or so (after nerf) and I get anywhere from 7-12 chitin / keratin from scorps, anklyo and turtles. In about a hour of doing laps up and douns a streatch of beach killing the turtles and anklyo I can get 150-200+ depending on how lucky I am with spawns. I have gotten far more and even far less at times.

Caves are the best place to farm it, you will just get less and if your on a pvp server its a good chance you may die.

So how much melee damage would be minimun to start 1-2 hitting?
What else have you incresed? (eg health to 1xxx)

Ok, firstly.. scorpions and spiders are in high density in caves.

Secondly, you can potentially farm up 300 chitin within like 30 minutes to an hour in a good cave.

Just get in, swing with a metal axe to kill AND harvest that way you don't actually hit the stuff you're trying to harvest with a pike. Be careful though, they still have yet to fix the issue of the mobs in caves pushing you through the wall and making you fall through the earth to your watery grave.

Lastly, if you can't find a cave or don't think you have what it takes to survive one, use a dino that kills fast and take out turtles, ankylos, carnos, stegos, scorpions, trikes.. everything that drops chitin/keratin but when the thing you're killing is dead, hop off and harvest with your axe.

Hope this helps.
What you fail to understand is that, like OBIPPO said above, caves are practically a commodity these days that are rare to find accessible. They are bolted shut as soon as a fresh wipe happens.

Hide (and animal parts like the above mentioned) are harvested better with Hatchet, or Sabertooth. You can increase your Sabertooth's Melee Damage to increase the yield of these.

Alternatively, if you would like Meat and Prime Meat for taming or feeding all your pets, get a Raptor, Carno, or Rex with high Melee Damage for maximum yield. (those three breeds really need a lot of Stamina though)

I haven't seen any confirmation if metal is better than wood, or if your own personal melee damage effect the gathering you do.

Cheers!

Depends on your server settings I guess.
Dinos range to roughly level 75 and 20-40 on average.
With 3x higher defense than normal.
On my server.

My cats is @ 1200hp 300 Stamina an ~ 600% melee dmg.
Enough to survive a cave full of bats, spiders, scorps and boas.
Usually you won't drop below 800hp even if swarmed.
You certainly won't if your server has normal def settings(i need roughly 4 bites with 3x defense on scorps 2 bites on spiders)
I get around 10-20 chitin per kill.
My sadly deceased cat ( admin set the server to a much higher defense of dinos ..,) had almost 1000% dmg after the nerf and got roughly 6 chitin more per kill.

Your biggest enemy is torpor if you farm nonstop.
Bring stimberrys with you or stims to counter.
Or loot every mob before you eat them( they usually drop some stimberrys)

I've noticed on all the raptors and dilos in my tribes parking lot there is 1 hide on each one. On the scorpion there were 3 chitin. I'm wondering if you can harvest items by gathering these items off the tamed critters or if it was a coincidence that they were there to start with. Anyone know if this is a thing?

I've noticed an increase in chitin and keratin when I use my metal hatchet .I've gotten upwards of 20 chitin from one Titanomyrma.

I have found the best way to get Chitin is to take either a Direwolf, or a Sabertooth and take it into the central or northern caves and kill everything. Gets you tons of meat, hide, and Chitin. The wolves are a personal favorite tho. If you level Melee Damage then you get more chitin per kill. With a lvl 222 Wolf I get about 30-40 Chitin per kill.

EDIT: I go to Central and after clearing it I get about 300-500 Chitin.

Stoooooooop please. READ the thread date! Whether it was on accident or not. It's not funny, and never will be. STOP necroing threads, almost nothing is worse.

Google searching "ark best way to get chiton" shows this thread at the top of the list. Why does it matter if it's an old thread, as long as it's on topic? I'm actually glad the guy posted because I was wondering the same thing.

There is a cave at 41.5 / 46.9 map the island

I go with my Direwolf into the cave. You should have min. 300 Melee dmg and >5000 health on the direwolf.

After killing all spiders and scorpions I get out of the cave with 2500 to 3200 Chitin after less then 10 minutes in the cave :)

Metal pick, set of flippers, kill trilobites, before you know it you have food, chitin, oil, and pearls...
masquerate Jan 11, 2016 @ 7:13am
1 think you just need to do, summon the broodmother xD.
Around 5-8K chitin per broodmother per hour, summon multiple and just farm it
MortVent Jan 11, 2016 @ 7:18am
I usually just take a frog and run through the swamps... killing bugs, get way more chitin than I need along with the paste I really need (usually start dropping the chitin after 4 stacks...)

Usually take the frog as the mount and either a couple sabers/wolves/raptors along for security

When I get a rex/dragon from mod: I run the beaches and farm trilobites... for chitin but mostly for oil and pearls (hate diving underwater)
