Problem equipping items from hotbar

Just downloaded game the other day, which took a whole week as i only have DSL. Everything went fine but slow. My problem is when i started game. Once i made my first set of tools and dragged them to hotbar, it would not let me equip them when i hit the appropriate number. Example= I had hatchet in 1st slot and pick in 2nd. When i hit the
number 1 for that tool it just crafted new ones instead of equipping. The same thing with 2. I only used the numbers at the top of keyboard, did not try keypad at the right. Never had this problem with other games using hotbar. It did let me equip when i went to inventory and right clicked the item and chose equip from dropdown menu. Am i missing a step? Did not play first session very long, became frustrated. Its not very much fun having to go to inventory to equip anything. And no, caps lock was not on

Did it craft new ones or did the ones that were there need repair? If the item is in total need of repair and you have the items in your inventory to fix it, hitting the slot number will repair it for you. If the item in your hotbar has been lost and you hit that number, it will craft a new one for you.

None of the items needed repair, they were new, just crafted them after using fists to gather resources. After crafting them i dragged them to the slots. The 2nd one i crafted was the hatchet and i put it in slot 2. I hit Q to use fists to gather berries. then i hit 1 to equip pick and it didnt. It just crafted a new pick. Then i hit 2 to equip hatchet and it didnt equip, it just crafted another hatchet. I even dragged them out of hotbar then dragged them back. still same thing. Ended up with several picks and hatchets. Havent played since then, but will try later on to see if its still a problem.

sounds like you've put the engram in the slot and not the actual pick

I would not have thought of that, a blueprint would do just that.

when i crafted these items i waited till they were done, then i went to inventory and dragged them to slots in hotbar. Thats the proper way, right? Like i said, i will try later to see if it happens again. I do understand what you were saying though, by putting engram from crafting inventory there, instead of real crafted item in inventory. Thank you for your responses. Will post later if problem re-occurs.

Game is working now. Everything equips from hotbar.
