Max tether distance Non-Dedicated update
Added adjustable "Tethering" distance for non-dedicated multiplayer sessions (maximum distance from Host player)

this may be a dumb question but with this is the max distance going to be upped significantly? That way we can adjust based on our machines performance drop. Because i see no point in being able to limit the 200m even further. I would like to see it up near 1000 or 500 at the least

where do you go to change it?

When you go to the local/host its down the bottom. (same screen as changing taming speeds, harvesting speeds etc)

Someone said at Max settings of 3 I think it was 720m, I'm trying out entering a value manually and see if it "takes' in the ini file. If it does it'll probably go much further.

Am I the only person that has no idea what any of that means?

it's for being able to invite your friends into your game without being on a dedicated server. So you run your game in Non-Dedicated mode and others can join like a server. The Tethering tethers their characters to the host, if they go being x (range in meters) they rubberband back.

More like if the host gets too far away from them, they get dragged along the ground toward the host no matter what they were doing, most often resulting in their death.

...but that's mostly fine, because when they choose a random spawn location, they will just spawn on top of the host anyway.

True pain in the ass when trying to have one player hunt while another builds or gathers, etc. Heh, fliers are also an interesting frustration.

yeah we had a max range of roughly 700m i was hoping someone would figure out how to change the code or whatever to increase it even further

Max setting 3.0 allows a distance of 620M.
What's the cons of increasing the distance? It may require more processing power of the non-dedicaded host?

Another bad thing about this is if you die... your buddys will die/spawn where you land... warping them in the middle of whatever it is their doing.... its quite horrible

I hate the tether SO BAD! I didn't really mind at first, but it's gotten so old. Like I have to hold my friend's hand ALL THE TIME. They need to be able to adjust it more than they have. At least 2000 m would be great. Option to set it to infinite would be ideal. I haven't noticed a decrease in performance at all from 200 to 700m. With the distance where it is now, it's just enough to give you a sense of freedom, before yanking that leash.

I have never played a multiplayer coop game where this was necessary. Why can games like 7 Days to Die allow any player to go anywhere on the map but ARK requires players to be within a certain distance of each other? Sounds like poor programming to me. But regardless of the reason, it's stupid.

I'm playing this for the first time over the free weekend, but this feature alone will dissuade me from purchasing the game. Already killed a few friends while kiting a dinosaur. Ridiculous.

well only non dedicated have tether distance which can be increased over 3.0 me and my mate play since we got it few days ago and do non dedicated host we stuck tether distance at 5.0 just by typing in small box at side of it and could move roughly 1200 m away from each other have not tried to see if we can up it further yet

The tethering has to do with loading the graphics in because of the way the game loads the textures and stuff. it loads in zones so when you are moving around it loads an area then unloads or degrades it to the point of it not using much resource when you leave the zone, but because the average or even unaverage computers used for gaming today still arent as strong as a server it cant handle having more then a few areas loaded. i believe the tether feature is ment to save from crashes and such. i think the reason the tether was put in place has to do with that issue and i also believe that because your the host, it has to do some extra loading from your end along with the person who is moving around... thus making lower frames for everyone in your game

Just host a dedicated on your local machine. It's really easy to set up.
