Just happened to me too in single player. One 112 level alpha raptor came out of nowhere and killed my 2 60lvl trikes, 96 lvl raptor, some carbo and 2 paras...all my dinos. Killed me in 4 hits even though I had full chitin armor and 250hp :(
Thats the stanard quote of most high level players that have all day to tame up high level spinos and rexs. They don't know any better, becaus its been awhile since they were level 23. ;)
Anyway your best bet for surviving is to hold out for the next patch. They are only going to concentrate alpha in the mountain regions. The reduction of damage to stone is pretty much useless since all this means is it takes longer to get you. . :)
Stick around your bases and use those spy glasses to find out what they are before you appoach them.
Also flying mounts can help. You can do a recon of your area of operations and see if its safe to go out or not.
To be honest I like this.. You should be scared to go outside... And make sure of your surroundings. But next patch you should be a little safer.. maybe.
Ive also heard tell that Alphas will not attack buildings if they see no reason to, thus building a high wall and having your dinos away from said wall should stop any passing Alpha from attacking your base.
But now with the alpha rex.. might want to reconsider it. If they can't see your dinos. They won't attack.
I'm level 66 and was wearing full flak armour.
When I returned to the area on a second Argentavis and found my gear the raptor was busy killing everything that moved and didn't appear to be taking any damage at all.
Seriously I like a challenge but that is just ridiculas !
I will give you some tips on how to buld a base that works against wild dinos of all types.
1. Wood spikes are your best defence against Raptors, Dilo,s Carno's and even T-Rex. I have had T-Rex's die on my wood spikes while I sat and did nothing.
2. Metal Spikes are the upgrade you might want for Alpha Dino's. If wood spikes kill normal rex. Metal should kill Alpha rex.
3. Build your base at the center of a fenced off Pen to prevent damage to your house from the occasional wild dino.
4. Get a fence around your base with a small Dino pen ASAP. Start off with a 2 high fence with spikes against it. Don't leave any gaps where a Dino could see you. No windows or doors open. You and your dinos need to stay away from the fence and out of sight. This by far keeps Dino's from EVER attacking your base as they don't even know you excist.
5. Get your walls 4 high and keep dinos at least 20 meters away from the walls so they don't aggro anything on the other side of the walls. You EVENTUALLY need it 4 high to prevent Spino's from claimbing into your base and T-Rexs from seeing you in your base.
6. Build your house with a Dino gate as one of the enterences. Keep the smaller tamed dino's inside your own house with you. Wild dino's won't even know they excist.
Most people are surviving just fine with 4 high wood walls and wood spikes on PVE servers. The trick is to go unoticed. Wild dino's ignore bases if your inside your house and none of your dino's are near the walls. Raptors "sometimes" aggro tamed dino's through walls but that can be prevented by keeping your dinos away from the walls and yourself away from them.
What works for me is 4 high walls, Spikes and keeping my smalll dino's INSIDE my own house. I keep my Raptors, Anky's, Dodo's and Petra inside my own house next to my bed :P. It prevents them being seen by wild dinos.
Obviously, wooden walls are your first serious defence but upgrade to stone as quick as possible. You will eventually need to upgrade to metal (the only tier Alphas can't destroy) walls. 2-3 high initially will stop most dinos, but ultimately 4 is ideal. Lay spikes around the external perimeter. Depending on base layout, put up small battlements in each corner which you can shoot from.
Make friends with nearby, established tribes. If they can build auto-turrets and generators, ask if they can build some for you (and associated wiring required, you will obviously have to get the mats for them to even consider helping, or sweeten the deal with them somehow). If they don't want to build auto-turrets (which is understandable), ask if they can send a Rex/Spino or high level "war spec'd" Carno to assist if you're attacked by an alpha. Alphas give very good XP and loot, so if they're trying to level their creatures, most tribes will not shy away from engaging an Alpha.
Now maybe after respawning in the small hut the guy wen tout and got spotted, but I'm not sure but even then, wooden spikes ? useless :(
Didn't expect so many comments, but thanks everyone. Yours Wolfman, was the most useful. I'll take your tips into account. I've just built an elevated base built on 5 pilons or so, three pilons tall+foundation+2walls. The foundation is walled with a stone wall. I'm gonna put a pen with all my future dinos around it.
Regarding what some others have said about the 196, I hope they do limit the alphas to more remote regions where low level players don't dare venture into. This one came straight from a small forest on the distance and attacked our base on the beach. Sigh.
We did have quite a bit of narcotics, but certainly not enough to tame anything but a few trikes. lol
