Simple Shotty vs Longneck Rifle for Damage?
Which gun should I be using for damage? My basic (primitive with stats from engram crafting) Longneck can 1 shot virtually anything of any level that is smaller than a trike with the exception of phiomas if you have good shot placement (aka you aim for the head). My basic SIMPLE shotty cannot do that, even aiming for the head it still takes 2 or 3 simple shotty blasts to kill a low level dilo/raptor/parasaur (that is CQB and pointblank ranges, BTW) ..... this just doesn't add up IMO. Maybe I'm just glitching/bugging, but I think that at particularly close range, the shotgun should almost always win the fight over the longneck rifle. As of right now, my weapon of choice is the longneck with a flashlight for the night hours and laser sight for daylight.

PS: I also happen to have ramshackle BPs for BOTH the longneck and simple shotty, which is why I am asking which one to use.

PPS: Yes, I know most of you will say something among the lines of "who needs guns" and/or "guns are for wussies". In fact, I don't rely on them for my kills, if I'm properly killing something like a saber or trike, I will use the pike, but the rifle makes for a nice sporty feel to the otherwise monotonous hunting world of Ark .... aka, I use guns for fun and not for seriousness.

The Longneckrifle has a single, heavy, fast projectile.
Shotshell are several small, lightweight projectiles.
In a thick Dino the shotgun should do less damage.

Longneck has the range advantage, fires one projectile at a time with about a 3 second reload time between shots. They hit HARD. Add in a scope and you can snipe pretty nicely. They can also one-shot a lot of flying mounts if you hit them in the head due to the x6 damage to them with ranged weapons.

As to the shotgun, They have multiple shots (I think around 6-8) that come out all at once in a cone affect. At near point blank you can kill most small to mid-sized dinos if you shoot them in the head.

Hope that helps. Cheers!

Nice to know that neither of your really read my post.

1) (Kobi) I cannot kill most small to mid size dinos with 1 shot at close range. Even when aiming for the head, it still takes 2 to 3 shots for even something as small as a dilo.

2) (Otterwald) I'm not shooting "thick" dinosaurs. I'm shooting dilos and raptors for ****'s sake! It's not like I'm expecting to one shot an armored dino like a trike or ankylo.

3) I know how guns work. But the way the shotgun is set up from my experiences, it's almost as if we have been given target/bird shot for the shotgun ammo over something like buckshot; it just lacks stopping power, IMO.
I actually find the simple pistol with scope is better than the rifle as it doesn't fall away when not in prone and can quick fire 6 shots. Up close I switch to the shotgun.

Guns are to kill people mostly. Bows are your ranged weapons agains dinos due to them being cheap (and their ammo being the most cost-effective). In general even assault rifle is a outperformed by a simple x-bow mainly because of the cost of ammo and it`s abundance inside some predators.

But if you really wish th use the gun - i would advice you to read the wiki. It has each gun described with damage/durabiltiy being listed on it. You`ll quickly notice that x-bow is the second most damaging ranged weapon in the game after the longneck (not counting the shotguns).
