Shotshell are several small, lightweight projectiles.
In a thick Dino the shotgun should do less damage.
As to the shotgun, They have multiple shots (I think around 6-8) that come out all at once in a cone affect. At near point blank you can kill most small to mid-sized dinos if you shoot them in the head.
Hope that helps. Cheers!
1) (Kobi) I cannot kill most small to mid size dinos with 1 shot at close range. Even when aiming for the head, it still takes 2 to 3 shots for even something as small as a dilo.
2) (Otterwald) I'm not shooting "thick" dinosaurs. I'm shooting dilos and raptors for ****'s sake! It's not like I'm expecting to one shot an armored dino like a trike or ankylo.
3) I know how guns work. But the way the shotgun is set up from my experiences, it's almost as if we have been given target/bird shot for the shotgun ammo over something like buckshot; it just lacks stopping power, IMO.
But if you really wish th use the gun - i would advice you to read the wiki. It has each gun described with damage/durabiltiy being listed on it. You`ll quickly notice that x-bow is the second most damaging ranged weapon in the game after the longneck (not counting the shotguns).
