Farming ?
Can someone give me some tips on farming ?

The system is too confusing and expensive to even bother with it.
50hrs on the game, havent harvested once.

What do you even want to harvest/farm?!

Use dinos to gather stuff and you get currently a lot more then per hand (overharvesting/overdamage).

1. Put down a plot on flat ground.

2. Put full water skin in the plot, remote use the waterskin to water it, let the rain handle it afterwards. Or build pipe system to water it.

3. Put some fertilizers in the plot. You can get fertilizers by putting 50 thatch and at least 3 poops in the compost bin.

4. Put a seed in the plot. Wait several seconds, it will turn into "Seedling".

5. Let it grow, keep it fertilized. Come back the other day to harvest.

First step is learn to pipe. It's a pain, and the ingrams add up quick, but having good, constant irrigation is crucial to farming.
Second step is fertilizer. The more you have, the better. While you can just add in poop and get some returns, fertilizer easily outshines poop in the longrun. Get a compost bin, put in 3 poops and some thatch and wait. After awhile, you get fertilizer to put in your farm plots that'll last for a long time.
Third and final step is patience. The plants in farms take a couple in game days to grow, so you're best off setting everything up and going off to do other things. Farm Plots keep food for a good chunk of time, so don't worry about your longgrass going bad while you're out cutting wood or taming a carno.

Not before you get a Trike. And they run in slow motion. Because of the speed difference it's alot less of a bother to just run and grab it yourself. Also they get stuck behind every single bloody sapling you pass.

I did the water + poo + seeds, the plant started to grow but then disappeared. I think it must have run out of compost.

I think the recipes for the pieces are way too expensive.
In the beginning you need points for saddles and weapons. By the time you can afford an irrigation system you're riding a Stego. And who needs farming if you got one of those.

Oh, I didn't mean that you let him follow but you ride him and attack the plants yourself. That way you get the resources they are meant to harvest!

Stego/Trizeratops/Mammoth/Para/Bronto = Berries, Thatch
Mammoth = Wood
Ankylo = Metal, Stone, Flint
Saber/Carno/Raptor/Rex = Meat, Hide, Keratin, Chiting (all you can get by hitting a dead corpse)

Level Damage on a dino you want to harvest with and you get A LOT more ressources then you would per hand. (More damage = More resources you get per hit)

People suggesting "just get a dino" are missing the fact that you cannot get crops (longrass, savoroot, rockarrot) from the bushes, and those are needed for the stat boosting food and kibble.

Good tip, did not know that.

Farming if for the vegetables for bufffood.

On top of the advice already given : temperature matters, the warmer it is the faster it'll grow. Never let it go dry it needs to be watered at all times and you need to put a lot of fertilizer, if you don't have enough poop can be used directly. Large poop is almost as effective, medium is ok and small is last resort really.

With all that any seed you planted to should grow and produce in 5 days or maybe even a bit less, ingame days of course not real ones.

Also small plots are enough for all except the special plants (the ones you can't gather in bushes). Fot the special ones medium plots at least are neded.

I haven't found any advantage to using bigger plots but maybe someone has more to say about it ?

Hah good. I happen to live at the waterfall, a river that goes to East1. I didn't know but often it's 45°C there, 30°C at night. Which is annoying because i overheat all the time.

A cheap easy way to get poo, is make a dodo farm, easy to tame and about 10 of them will provide enough ppoo to fill 10 or more compost bins in a short time. thatch, can be gotten quite easily. Its 50 thatch 3 poos, of same size. a compost bin can hold enough poos to make 2 fertiliser at a time.

Each fertliser bag gives 50,000, enough to last around one day. having one compost bin for one plot, will mean u only have to do the poo picking every 2 days. Its usually better to use a small number of plots, fil up with lots of fertliser, this is easier than doing poo every day, simply collect the longrass or stuff your growing and store it.

Longrass, other vegetables spoil quickly, so if you don't have a fridge, or a long long lasting preserving bin stocked with lots of sparkpowder. I suggest leavin the crops where they are, they last much longer and be preserved. The amount that can be stored from a crop yield is dependant on the size of the crop, i think, i always built large ones so i can't prove that. for berries its normally around 300 per plot. Some people say they grow faster in hotter locations, so don't put crops on cold mountains. Being close to a water source, makes piping easier.

For piping start with a intake pipe, easier method is then build a straight line to your crops. Then build a tap on the end, close to the crops. You should see the word irrigated if its a success.

No need to build water tank or anything like that. You can also rotate crops, this reduces the amount of work u have to do, but u have to wait for new crops to grow. You can demolish the seed and regrow a different plant. 3 large poos are worth 45,000, only 5000 less than a fertiliser bag. So if u have 3 large poos, just put them in the crop and u get just as much as one fertliser bag, it will save you 100 thatch and time waiting for the compost. But you can put many more bags, that is why i suggest using small poos, like from a dodo, they poop alot.

Looks like I'll be needing a maid for when i go adventuring. I often take 3 day trips.

Very good read, thanks everyone.
Jeza Aug 3, 2015 @ 3:03am
if you take 3 days trips you absolutely need piping so your crops stay hydrated and fill at least the 1st row of slots with fertilizer, a bit more if you use just large poop.
That should be enough to keep your crops alive and thriving.

Correction - Saber works like a hatchet(axe) = more hide/chitin/keratin then meat.
Carno/Raptor/Rex works like a pick = More meat then hide/chitin/keratin

A dodo farm is quite nice for poop but since they patched the pigs they are even better. They are real poop machines.
And the only thing thats faster are Argentavis with raw meat inside them. Press rightclick nonstop so they use up a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of stamina and they poop nonstop.
