Is there any point in upgrading from stone pipes to metal ones?
Out of pure curiosity, what are the differences, if any? Do they do a better job at irrigating? Is the difference entirely because they're more resilient in PVP environments? Is it just a visual upgrade?

From what I can tell, it's not as though a boosted irrigation range for a tap would be all THAT useful considering the substantial difference in crafting costs. That metal and cementing paste can most likely be better-spent elsewhere.

Stone pipes = Breaks every time a dino walks over or someone sneezes too hard.

Metal Pipes = Will outlast your walls probably.

Ah. Do friendly dinos break your pipes, or only wild ones? My farms are all behind my walls.

If you ever had a wild bronto or trike or stego tail swipe near your pipes and blow them to smithereens or had some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ come along and use as a metal hatchet on your pipes, you'll appreciate the metal ones a lot more.

Okay, so dinos don't smash them simply by walking over them, they break them when they attack. I also don't really need to worry about other players coming to wreck my stuff; I play 99.99% single-player.

Metal water tank also has a 500 water capacity over the stone tank's 200 capacity.

Thankfully, no. But wild dinosaurs engaging you or other wild dinosaurs will destroy stone pipes.

Want to see the duribility of metal pipes?

Take a stroll along the north beach on offical server 28 (prob on plenty others but this is one of the ones I know)

You'll see quite a few raided husks of bases, with full intact or mostly intact irrigation systems.

Awesome, good to know. Are they a bit less butt-ugly than stone pipes?

Is the placement any different?

the water is under the ground no need to make a whole systm spanning from the sea or a lake just find a spot where water is close to the surface and put your intake there in the ground close if your lucky its right by your base

Living in the mountains far away from any possible place for intake with just 3 water tanks for personal water use (80% go for cooking/making dyes) and with a large garden under the fresh air with no irrigation system at all. Water is not a problem as it rains way too often in the game.
