Can someone explain to me the different tiers of building materials
All I really know is that thatch sucks, wood is ok, stone is the best economically speaking for defense, and metal is for warring. Other than that, I'm not really sure which is the best material for me.

From what I understand, Thatch is best used as a placeholder to lay the foundation of your base, Wood gives moderate defense against dino's but players can wreck it pretty easily, Stone is unable to be damaged by dino's, metal axes and hatchets only do 1 point of damage, but it folds to explosives, metal is invulnerable. If I'm wrong someone please correct me. Stone just seems to be the best choice as it stands. Is there something I'm missing?

PvP or PvE?
Don't need more than wood for PvE.

PVE mainly, but I prefer the look of stone to wood so I will always opt for stone over wood. Really I'm trying to decide if grinding for an all metal fotress is worth it

I'd say no, not worth it.
The only advantage of the higher tiered mats over wood (in PvE) is the time it takes for them to become public property. And aesthetics, of course

I have an all wood base, but I've surrounded my storage centers in stone (working on metal) so that when I take a break I have more time that the items will be safe :)

I'm suprised they didn't add an entire tier for reinforced wood. Hope they add walls, foundations, and ceilings later.

Wood sucks on a pvp server also - unless you want a player on a Trex or similar to easily break into your base.

Id say go stone on PvE personally. its immune to any dino damage and heavily resistant to metal tools. I just like its look but trust me big dinos can chomp through wood VERY fast. i had two rexes ravage my raptor/sabre pen walls in seconds and thats when i went full stone. granted the rexes got wrecked once inside by my army of raptors but yeah...

I also play on a private server so its worth the effort and i dont have the griefers/exploiters to deal with.
