If you're offline or on a private game with friends only or whatever, You don't have to worry, Dinos' eat to regain their health and food metres and they don't deplete those two bars unless their attacked or are mounted and running.
If this is in a singleplayer game, When you log off, the world stops with you.
This is wrong. Tamed dinos will drain food just sitting idle. How long it takes to drain fully varies by dino (and by tame). You can mitigate this by overloading their inventories with food for herbivores, meat expires a lot faster however so filling their inventory wont work as well.
The feeding trough only increases food spoil duration by the same as putting it in a dinos inventory, so its not a solution for a long term absense. You may want to have a friend feed your dinos if you plan to be away for an extended period.
I've kept a group of dinos' in a private server for a couple weeks and they've never drained their food meter.. If this happens in private/custom servers now, than i'm outta date ;p
as for singleplayer, The game's world stops when you log out so it's not even a problem.
If you're speaking about online servers? Yes. Different cases than both of my explainations.
