You know you need to actually activate a parachute in your hotbar or inventory, right? It's not automatic.
The game notifies you when your dinos die. It should still be up there, if it was on follow it may have followed you until you died.
On SP, it will just be in stasis until you get in range, so you just need to fly back spamming "all follow AOE" and get close enough. Probably won't starve. At least any time soon.
On MP, it might die if something eats it (is it on passive?), or it loses a fight. I think this stuff only happens if someone is nearby. If you wait long enough and someone keeps it loaded, it could possibly starve. If it's just hanging in midair, it should be safe for quite a while, depending on height.
