Turn off Auto Update
The server that I play on always seems a bit behind on the update. Right now, my client auto updated to v190 and the Server sits on v189.0. In short, I CAN'T PLAY.

I admit that I'm a recreational player and finding a couple of hours to play can be tough, so it's frustrating to find the time and then unable to connect.

Is there a way to stop the auto update?

To answer your question yes... Go in your Steam library and right click on the game, in properties / updates are the setting for how it updates and when.

ive done it before dude. 1st turn off ur auto update of the game by right clicking ark, go to updates and change the prority. and instead of loading ark by pressing play in the steam window i hit the "x" to close the window (steam still stays active) u should see the steam icon down near ur date and time on the taskbar on bottom of screen. i then right click the steam icon which brings up the list of games and then load ark from there!!! havnt tried it in a while cos i now run my own private server so i keep everything up to date. hope it helps

I dont mean to be disrespectful, but i have stopped most of my games from auto updating when i have a dedicated server because of clients that cannot login. However, the feature is not available in this game. When I go to steam > library > ark survival, i right click and select properties. In the updates tab, the section that says automatic updates only provides me with 3 options: always keep updated, update when i launch it, high priority - always update this game first.

If you have another way of preventing the updates, let me know. Just saying "go to updates and adjust your settings" doesnt work.

Thanks in advance.

if ur saying that to me i didnt just say "go to updates and adjust ur settings i said exactly what u need to do.

most if not all early access games need to be updated when the devs rollout new patches. so this means u can never totally turn off updates on these versions of the game. u can only choose when you update them.

so basically u turn the update priority of ARK to "update when i launch", and then close the steam page (as steam stays active in the backround until u close the program by right clicking on the steam icon on the right hand side of the taskbar and exiting steam, or re opening page and logging out) and right click the steam icon on the right hand side of the task bar and launch the game from there.

that is the only way i have managed to bypass the game update.

In your library, downloads, under the game where it says auto-updates enabled click that. Then select only update this game when I launch it. Then go into your steam folder and find the shooter games.exe and create a shortcut of that on your desktop and launch from there. I have to run steam first on my machine or it will not run. This helps admins log in before an update and check animals and base/stuctures and log a save point in case things go poof on a server update. Hope this helps.

Thank you. I will give that a try. Was not intending any friction. Just wanted to know. Good info.

Make a copy of your Ark server, and put it in another location out of your steam folder. Use the offline folder to play out of. The online folder will update as normal. When your server is updated, update your offline folder.

I use mods and that's what we do on my dedicated server and clients.

This is normal for all steam games, and is how steam handles updates. Just set it to only update when you launch the program, and then don't run Ark through steam until you're ready to update it. Just run the exe file directly. You can find it in your Steam/steamapps/common/ARK/ShooterGame/Binaries/Win64/ run the ShooterGame.exe file to start Ark without launching it through steam.
