Tame an Icthy. They can easily outrun Megalodons.

I use a turtle. Lvl 90 tame and I only put levels into speed. Everyone in my tribe made fun of me until they rode it.

Two sarcos. Very fast and won't run off like ichtys in a fight. Also can be brought on land for protection...if you have a behemoth gate for them to fit through. Though my mated pair has killed everything that's pissed them off.

This exactly grab a flipper and a metal pick. Bonus points if you use Lazarus chowder. Don't waste points in oxygen.

Skill oxygen. It lets you swim faster and stay underwater longer.

Tame an Ichthy.

it's easier to tame, has a lower level saddle, and faster than anything else in the ocean.

Just remember they're cowards who will abandon you at the first sign of trouble so don't take them into a fight (run away from the fight and circle back instead).

Gonna be really tough without a water mount man. I did get some oil by just running the SW coast and looking for the oil rocks near the shore, but damn the megas are always nearby.

It takes 5 minutes, a stack or 2 of meat, and zero narcotics/narcoberries to tame an itchy. When you're done farming your oil, just take your saddle with you and leave him by the shore. If he's alive next time you need oil - great. if he's dead, tame another one in 5 minutes.

Trying to farm oil without taming will take you hours and frustrate the hell out of you.

Without taming:
spec oxygen, cook lazarus, swim out and mine the nodes.
Not sure why you'd do it without taming an Ichthy though.

You don't necessarily have to tame, but it requires an investment into the oxygen stat and using lazarus chowder...but that could be slow going as it takes a significant investment into the oxygen stat to not be slow as all get go in the water. Icthy's tame quickly, are fast as hell and the saddle is easy to make, you really can't go wrong, just gotta have a nice riverway to keep them in.

This.

At 400 oxygen you swim only slightly slower than the sharks, but that's some 20 more levels sunk into oxygen than you'd otherwise need for diving.

The Ichthy is just pure easy mode though. You don't have to KO them, or even go looking for them (stand in the water and they'll find you), and it's the first aquatic saddle you can get. Their kibble is even the easiest to make (dodo eggs).

You can find it pretty close to land by swimming up and down the eastern shore. If you're quick enough you can dive down, harvest and get back up before you start to drown. It won't be a lot, but it's oil.

oxygen at 200 will help. and there are a couple of sweet shallow spots to get oil down the south east. in the middle of the map down south there are the southern islets if u go to the the spot near a small inlet and island there is a spot with lots and lots of rock formations. on the backside of that on the eastern end while looking south out to sea there are some rocks just of the shore if u go to those and jump in the water off the back of them there are 2 spots 1 to the left of the rock and 1 to the right of the rock and i was able to get to those without any mounts at 160 oxygen. but go 200 to be sure

I tried the dolphin route. Never again. Such a waste of time for me. I got a sarco, used it for many many levels until i finally got a mega and saddle. I prefer the sarco, but the turning radius is so stupidly large, it actually tends to pull sharks that didn't know we were there just trying to turn around.

Off topick, i didn't know oxygen increased swim speed. I"m at 300+, don't seem to be going any faster. Does speccing into movement speed affect swim speed as well?
