I encountered the same issues with dying (my post got lost somewhere in the feedback forum) where if one person is doing something and the host happens to die it just yanks you away to wherever the host spawned at. There's no notice or anything. I think it flashes up a message AS it's moving you.
It makes even close range co-op play nearly impossible, especially early on before you have a real base, because there's no option for the host to spawn near you (that I could find). The spawns are random over a pretty wide area.
What you can do in the meantime (it will require quite a bit more configuration) is start up a dedicated server on one of your machines. My friend and I are both running on med-high power PCs and are able to run the server and the game without any serious performance issues, but depending on your system this might not be a viable option.
EDIT: Apart of course from the obvious 200m restriction. Does dedicated cost money to run on my on own computer?
The dedicated server runs separately from the people connecting to it. Sometimes it's even on it's own machine entirely. The process is running as the server, and then any clients can connect to it. This way you could have a server running and game logic being processed even when nobody is playing, like the official and unofficial hosted servers do.
You do have the OPTION of purchasing hosted server space somewhere else. That's something that you can do that would cost money.
You also need to do some network stuff and open ports on your router/firewall so that other people can connect to it, if you run it from your computer. This is a safety thing. Your computer doesn't want just anyone accessing it so you have to specifically tell it that you want it to be opened on that port. There are guides on how to do this if you google.
