i can run around the map to without getting lost and without gps, its just about time.
Honestly, the game map is VERY detailed and accurate that your having issues is a clear indication you dont know how to properly use a map....you should learn, could save your life someday....
Landmark navigation is by far the most simple that can be used in ARK in conjuction with the map. From almost anywhere on the island you can see at least one of the obilisks, usualy at leat 2 can be seen. These are gonna be the most prominent landmarks to navigate by....but aside from those the map does not have areas withoug defining land marks. Between the rivers, deltas, mountains, cliffs, penisulas........well, you get the idea, and its ALL on the map, in fairly good detail.
The sun is another way of getting your bearings and basic navigation. The sun in ARK goes from true east to true west.....its more accurate than the ingame compass in this regard!
In all seriousness, game aside for a moment...take an hour and google some info, teach yourself how to properly use a map.
There are certain things EVERYONE should know....how to read a map, how to use a compass, how to swim, how to give CPR......if you dont know these things learn them asap!
please help:(.
Later on there is a gps that will tell you the exact coords of where you are but I don't use it, never needed to, the map is actually pretty good for navigating by landmarks.
If you want to make something on the map such as your base or the oblisks then use "P"
do you use a map to learn where to go in a new house? no. you walk around your house and remember where things are by sight......."oh my bedroom is down the hallway that comes off the left side of the kitchen, its the second door to the left"
this is a very VERY simple example of how you do it in the wild or anywhere.
it mind blows me how many people have a hard time with direction, though i will admit i have a pretty vivid visual mind. I have always been the person in multiplayer games that navigates and keeps track of me and my friends. (who are CONSTANTLY getting lost haha)
It's a server options
Once I got a ptery trained and was able to fly the bigger picture became more clear.
I remember starting out using the map - and mainly being dismayed at the size of the marker pin depicting my location. If the marker was smaller and in the shape of a crosshair perhaps, small movements of travel in Ark would be more graphic and obvious to those relying on the game map for navigation.
I could also wish fot a map zoom option, so that even though you may have explored only localy the map could still be useful.
Have a look around in your surroundings for any visible landmarks or things you recognise.
Make a note of things like obelisks, mountains, rivers, coastline etc. Then use the compass to figure out what directon you are facing.
You can get a GPS later in the game but once you get familiar with navigation it's hardly needed.
If the server has the option enabled, you will see your marker on the map. If it isn't enabled, you won't.
