Foundation / Ceiling Height Inconsistency
Hi Guys,

In my recent testing, I've come across an inconsistency and I just wanted to clarify whether anyone else had noticed this and query whether or not its working as intended.

This is one of my test huts. http://imgur.com/3KTRA9k

Its a pretty simple hut, it is 3 blocks long, by 3 blocks wide, by 2 blocks high. Inside, the hut has two floors which are both 3x long by 3x wide by 1x high.

This is me trying to place a fabricator on the ground floor of the building. http://imgur.com/AG3j5V3

As you can see, whilst its a tight fit (and indeed it actually pokes through to the upper floor in places) the object is in fact able to be placed on the ground floor.

This is me now trying to place the same fabricator on the second floor of the building. http://imgur.com/kzTt3mI

This second floor supposedly shares the same dimensions as the floor below and yet notice how the fabricator object has become obstructed and cannot be placed. This is true not just for the position shown in the screenshot, but for anywhere on the second floor of the building.

My first thought was that perhaps the fabricator actually required a proper "foundation" block underneath it, but upon testing I found I was able to place the fabricator object onto the roof of the structure, which of course has only ceiling blocks, not foundation blocks. http://imgur.com/b3WaeCO

So after some thinking, it occurred to me that the manner in which ceiling blocks are attached might mean that they sit ever so slightly higher than a foundation block does relative to the base of the adjacent walls.

Turns out this postulation may be correct, unfortunately however I wasn't able to capture a screenshot which accurately represents this height discrepancy between foundation blocks and ceiling blocks which are functioning as floors. A view of the join between the "ceiling" piece and the wall didn't really show anything meaningful, and the screenshots depicting each floor of the structure (as above) don't really definitively illustrate a significant difference in height.

I did perform a somewhat unscientific "jump test" in which I had my character jump up and down whilst standing on both floors of the building and I noticed a very definite difference in the time it took before my character hit the "roof" while I was on each floor. Based on this limited test and the fact that I wasn't able to place a fabricator on the second floor, it would seem that the second floor is not as tall as the ground floor. This height discrepancy seems sufficient to prevent the placement a fabricator (and perhaps other objects) in the space available on the second floor.

Has anyone else noticed this difference in heights? Or am I attributing it incorrectly and there is another explanation?

Additionally I'm curious to know whether or not this height difference is an intentional feature, or simple the result of a construction system which hasn't yet been been made fully consistent.

Feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time!

I can confirm what you're saying, the ceilings are placed higher than foundation.

Try placing a foundation and place a ceiling on side of the foundation, you'll see the difference rly good like that.

And the difference makes that i can not walk straight out of my door to go on the balcony, i have to cruch to get thrue the door.

When placing things on a second floor where you used ceiling tiles as the floor for your second floor. Ceiling tiles actually place just a hair higher than foundations do. If you want an example. Place one thatch foundation and then place one thatch ceiling tile on the edge of the foundtaion to make a sort of "deck". You will see that the ceiling tile does not make an even floor with the foundation. It is slightly higher than the flooring. It works the same way when placing them on top of a wall. So your first floor will have slightly more space from ground to ceiling than any of your higher floors.

I ended up making all my buildings two wall lengths high in order to accomodate most of the fixtures in the game. Not to mention that the large chests can't be placed in a single height building and steel vaults require 3 height walls in order to place.
