Argents for hunting prime meat dinos?
So I am trying to make taming more workable. What I was thinking of doing was using a newly acquired level 93 argent to hunt rex, stegos, etc for prime meat so I could go around farther to farm it when doing a tame. Are Argents capable of this? Should I just keep raising its melee?

Currently, I have a 103 Sabertooth that's amazing and I race around on him and take stuff out and race back with the prime. The bird would give me greater traveling options during a tame but his melee even at 93, is so low when I look at it..

The base melee damage is only 20, but it pumps up pretty quickly and at ~700 or 800 it's already high enough to take down rexes and brontos.

Still, a cat is undeniably stronger in killing.

yeah my cat is amazing, even over the Rexes I have. From a mobility standpoint, the bird would just be easier and I can load him with Narcotics and tame stuff wherever I find it. Right now I try and lead stuff I want to tame close to my base so the cat doesn't have to run as far, regardless of how fast it is.

It is definitly possible but you prob will not get was much prime as with the cat ( I have not farmed prime with a cat yet but I get way more prime with spino then with argen).

You don't want to harvest the corpses with the dino if you want raw prime. Do it yourself with the pike or pickaxe.

@Tom

For real? I thought the dinos would get way more? I never put points into melee; other stats but not melee. Wouldn't that hamper my prime farming over say the cat?

I haven't done research, but it seems raw prime is a % per hit, so the more hits you get when chopping up the corpse, the more chance for raw prime. Could be wrong, but when my cat chomps down the corpses in 1-3 hits I never get more than 1-2 raw prime, whereas busting them with my pickaxe I sometimes get 5 or even more from one bronto/rex.

Thats not true at all. You get more prime with dinos as soon as you get more dmg than with melee. Despite beeing able to over damage with a dino which increases the prime gathering even further

Cats to me aren't as good at getting meat anyways (like overpowered hatchets for getting hide/chitin etc). My %melee rex on the other hand is a meat farming machine....

My cat's melee is around 900..he usually gets 1-2 or sometimes none. I haven't tried harvest with my axe in I couldn't tell you how long. So no idea what I'd get heh,
BigDally Jul 21, 2015 @ 5:40am
I usually get 2-3 prime per bronto with %170-%180 rex...it goes up from there.

well cat is supposed to get more items like hide and chitin/keratin. It's the only one to do that tho.

Yeah, I def don't get as much meat on my cat, so that makes sense.

IMO arg are best at hunting for prime.
They are able to travel fast and are not bothered wiyh the ground obstacles like rocks, raptors and stuff.

Seems your arg is already high level, all you need is a bit more movement speed, 700++%dmg 1k++ life and 1k++ stamina.

As for prime harvesting, i did not notice any difference between arg and others.
I get up to 6 prime on brontos, 5 on rexes, 3 on others

My experience is that argentavis is pretty good at gathering prime. Better at prime gathering than a sabertooth, but not quite as good as a carno. Both argent and carno seem better than metal tools, to my experience. And, of course, comes with the little thing called "can fly around and find appropriate prey faster than either."

So %melee on anything but a cat can get you up to 6 prime on a bronto! I have yet to get more than 4 so that's good news.
