Thatch walls viable in single player?
The gf and I are playing on a private LAN server I host, about 70 hours in. I just started a new project, a giant dam to house some tamed water dinos. It crosses a river mouth to the ocean and I've now just laid all the fence foundations.

The amount of wood I estimated I'll need sounds crazy now. Would thatch walls be viable with us solo? The water dinos will usually be far from predators when parked, but I want to make sure the sharks won't roll up and start hacking away. I've never done a water cage before so I'm making sure before I begin.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Ah ok. Will there be risk of predators chipping away at the walls? We have a smaller land base so protecting it hasn't been an issue and I'm not sure how predators work in that regard.

For sure. A Rex can knock down thatch in seconds. Heck, I kited a Bronto back to my base to tame it, and one swing of his tail and he'd destroyed half my thatch roof and severely damaged the wooden tops of my fence.

Stone is your best friend while at the same time being the bane of your grinding ark existence. :P

Yeah, but it gives you a goal to work toward.

Well I got distracted, found 3-4 megas on the shore when i got back with some wood carriers. Taming one now just to try to process. Accidentally killed the higher level ones : ( so I have a level 1 taming, but the other gave me several prime meat so should be good.

Yea, Ankys are our best bet for stone atm, but just remember it's not the best solution. At 1000% damage, I still only average 6-7 stone from a rock cluster. 2 stone from a boulder if I'm lucky.
You will get much more just pressing E while running down a mountainside than using an anklyo

Thatch can hold up well even against large dinos, so yes its viable Im at lvl 63 and still have not bothered upgrading my little shack to wood. Being guarded by four rexes, makes life really easy.

Ahh yes I remember my first encounter like this.
Was probably the first or second day, getting chased by a T-rex and thinking if I made it inside my thatch hut I would be ok....

We started it all with wood, then realized the metal dino gate is not the size for Megalodons.... sigh

Dinos will only attack your structures if you aggro them. So if it's unlikely that a predator comes near your base because it's on a secluded cliff or something, it's safe to build with thatch ... if you have no problem with the ramshackle look.
