Is there a way to stop an object snapping in to place?
I'm trying to place a wooden pillar next to a wall and for the life of me I can't keep it from snapping on to the wall where it can't actually be placed anyway! Any ideas?

Have you tried standing right next to the wall and slowly move your mouse away from the walls (while looking at the ground)?

Yea, given that a go. It doesn't pull away until you're way away from the wall. :(

You could try, although I doubt it would work much differently:

Stand on the other side looking towards where you want it build.
Activate free look camera (default keybind is k) and move camera so you can see the "correct" side
Then move foward and see how it goes. (With free look still activated)

Not quite how you suggested, but was actually able to manipulate it enough in that free look mode. Thanks!

My best ideas would be to snap the pillar to another fence foundation (if you can build one in 90°) or try to build with thatch foundations towards your wall and snap the pillar to the thatch foundation and remove it afterwards. If it wasn't a wall on a wall foundation, you could even use a (thatch) ceiling to get more snap points.

Thank you for the idea! I looked up a solution for this on google, found this post, and your explanation for how to do it!
Who cares if "He already solved his problem", it's a public post.
