I usually want to put wire where I want it (such that you can - since the wiring system generally sucks donkey), run a wire to somewhere nowhere near my electric goodies to keep the noise away (seems like they reduced generator noise though, which is nice), and then plop a generator at the end of the line, but that is brutally difficult if not impossible to do since generators only have a few specific snap points for wire - you really need to plop the generator first and run wire from it, which means you then can't get the already difficult to deal with wire anywhere near where you actually want it.
Here's to hoping they revamp/improve the wire/pipe system at some point.
Outlet to outlet connections would seemingly be possible with the existing system and would help a lot - even if it would still be hideous. In our current base we use "2 high (2 wall sections high to accomodate large chests) floors and we have a 1 high "crawl space" between the first and second floor so I can run water pipe and electric pipe thru it to hide some of the mess (gotta have a water tap inside the house for convenience, ya know). It's a whole lot of hassle to just semi cleanly be able to wire up 2 fridges and 2 omni lights (that are bright as the sun but beat having tons of standing torches all over even if their light looks cooler).
It'd be nice to see some level 70+ engrams with tesla-esque wireless energy connectivity. :)
It'd be like, how can a transmitter the size of a fist need 200 metal ingots, 50 crystals, 50 cementing paste, 50 circuit boards, and 50 polymer to make?!? Dunno, don't care, I'll take a dozen.
