I've build a rather large structure, outside dimensions of 15x10x12. I can stand in some places and the shelter icon will eventually come on, others it may be on for a while then off. I've gone to great lengths to assure the snap points are where they need to be for enclosure. Can't say how many times I've has to rip sections out to be sure the walls were attaching to the right points.
Is this still a problem with larger complex structures? not that it really matters for this one in the southern half of the map but when I build up in the snow biome it may be a problem.
i believe any house higher than 5? or perhaps 6 walls high will not receive the "House" buff
Whenever I build a structure with just doorways as entry points it doesn't seem to happen.
So you can have a 13x13 (11x11?) cross shape with a single wall at the end of each arm and one ceiling above the middle of the cross and it's a "house" if you stand on the middle tile. It looks like wide open space but it works.
Easy enough to test it out as you build... can always add a single tile safety layer in between anyway.
"Without the "house" the dino can still be killed from the outside, but with the House the dino takes no damage."
I didnt know this! Awesome...
For a decent sized base to take advantage of the house it sounds like a series of garages with a central corridor and the entrances to the rooms staggered might be is best. then the walls from the opposite side of the corridor count.
